|
|
hello guys I'm dual booting with a macbook.
I'm in the live cd but cant setup the network
I tried the net-setup script on eth0 but nothing happend
I tried
Code: | #dhcpcd eth0
dhcpStart: interface eth0 is not Ethernet or 802.2 Token Ring
|
then tried
Code: | #ifconfig -a
eth0 Link encap:UNSPEC HWaddr 00-50-8D-00-00-FE-87-8B-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00

TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1

TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0

Ive read in the forums and I THINK that apparently the kernel loads the firewire as eth0 instead of ethernet
My ethernet controller is Marvell
and Im using a macbook |

Use a different livecd to install from, and check here for more info. _________________ iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAA

i tried with 2 minimal cds...
my first attempt was with amd64 because somebody told me that
my core2 duo was 64 bit capable...
that was when i did my first post.
Next i tried with an x86 2007 minimal cd....
and still could not start the network |

I be leave he means use something like a Knopix or Ubuntu live CD. The Gentoo minimal is just because it's convenient, small, fast and fit's most peoples needs for installing Gentoo. But it can be installed from almost any live cd. All Core 2's are 64 bit. If you plan on installing a 64 bit system you'll have to grab a 64bit live CD (you cant chroot into a 64bit system from a 32 bit one). |

Systemrescuecd is a good one - has a 64-bit kernel too. Plus, I think it has your drivers... AFAIK. _________________ iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAA

You can install gentoo from any linux livecd.
Use sysresccd.

Yep!
Oh, and BTW, you may consider using the funtoo stage tarballs instead of the standard ones/ You'll get a standard gentoo system, but the tarballs are more up-to-date. Less building, and you won't hit problems like the expat bug.

You'll have the same as everyone else.
Daniel Robbins (the original creator of Gentoo and (AFAIK) the head of the Gentoo Foundation) made these stages up the same exact way the official stages are created - starting with a legit gentoo install and tarballing up the needed files.
My last few gentoo installs have all been using these.

ok so i went to the page you gave me, went under downloads
and then downloaded the version powerPC (Mac)
I used nero to burn the ISO ( I am confident that I know how to copy iso's)
when i booted from the cd, I got
Missing Operating system
I downloaded it twice to see if maybe it was a download problem.
I burned it numerous times...
I tried the md5sums and I got and Input/Output error
correct me if I am wrong but i did md5sum after i had burned the iso
so where do I go from here? |

If your Mac is one of the newer ones, then it uses an x86 or x86_64 chip (Intel), not a powerPC chip. |
