Hello all last night I did an emerge rsync then emerge -u world and went to bed, this morning I am unble to emerge -s or install or unmerge anything with emerge. I know that with the upgrade amoung glibc python, portage also was upgraded to 2.0.5. Here is the error I get when I do anything with emerge
Code:
bash-2.05a# emerge mutt
!!! Unexpected end of config file: variable :
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/emerge", line 2, in ?
    import os,sys,portage,xpak,string,re,commands,time,threading
  File "/usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/portage.py", line 3510, in ?
    db["/"]["porttree"]=portagetree("/",virts)
  File "/usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/portage.py", line 2307, in __init__
    self.portroot=settings["PORTDIR"]
  File "/usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/portage.py", line 692, in __getitem__
    self.populate()
  File "/usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/portage.py", line 678, in populate
    useorder=self["USE_ORDER"]
  File "/usr/lib/python2.2/site-packages/portage.py", line 699, in __getitem__
    if x.has_key(mykey):
AttributeError: 'NoneType' object has no attribute 'has_key'

Not sure what happend and I hope someone knows an easy way to fix this. An update world should not break your system.

So, ok my next question is if this is a known problem why leave that portage package out there? If you know it is going to break a machine shouldn't you take it away? Its common that people are going to do and updatae world for their machines. Now I have to spend a good bit of time trying to fix this. I can understand how it can happen to begin with that is fine but with three other people reporting this problem and then for the dev. to just leave it out there I can't understand.

Good point. This is precisely why I have never used world. Don't think I ever will either.

I learned my lesson I guess the hard way. I did do a search last night and saw that article you pasted in your reply but I looked at the date and saw it was almost a month old so I figured it must be fixed now no way someone would let this just contiune to happen. Sigh I was wrong. I guess I am just use to there being three levels of software way to stable, testing (which is plenty stable) and unstable( you will break your machine at some point). Not like it is here, where packages are sort of pushed out and we do the testing of them for the most part. Which isn't all that bad as long as there is a fix for it quickly, and once something bad is found it is taken care of so other people don't break their machines. This I think needs to be addressed some how to the dev. Did anyone file a bug report on this yet?

Not that it is terribly important, but...

LOL yep I see that now, the one prior I think was the 28th or something. I guess that is a good start, but the package should just be not included in emerge -u world. It was relativly painless to fix only took a few minutes. Thanks for reminding me of the link. As long as I don't have to start all over from scratch I am happy.
