I dont see why another search for threads would be bad. It would be especially good if there was a way to block out the "non searchable" items and words because you would only be searching a thread
Searching a specific topic would be easily doable and I'll include it with the new search engine. Bypassing the search stopwords will not be possible as they prevent the words from being indexed as the extra data needed to allow searching them makes a drastic hit on performance. We will however be having another look at the list before the new search engine is released.
i forgot it's because they're indexed. Is it possible to get a 2nd searchable index just for the stop words? Also what about other characters like $ ! ; } & < > ?

I'm not sure if this has been recommended yet or not, but when searching clicking the link to a post always lands you on the first page of the thread instead of the page on which the term you searched for appears. Many posts in the forum are 30+ pages. This makes finding the information you're looking for quite cumbersome.
It would be nice if searching for the term took you to the exact post it was in instead of the first post in the thread. Is this a possibility or maybe I'm just missing some obvious functionality of the board that already does this.

That's the exact same reason I voted yes.

Another improvement would be if the posts were numbered. Then one could refer to 'look at topic ABC, post nr XYZ, third paragraph'. I think that would be quite useful.

A possible solution the the original problem 'search a thread' is to include an option of showing all posts in a topic, and then just use the 'find'-function of your favourite browser. A problem with that solution is that it might strain the bandwith of the forum servers if many people were to use it and lets say display all posts in some ATI-thread or some other enormous thread, which is not ideal.

They are. Your post above is post 3160384 in topic 412906. The bbcode for the last sentence is
Code:
They are. Your post above is [post]3160384[/post] in [topic]412906[/topic].
. To get the post/thread numbers, just look at the url. For posts, the link is hidden in a tiny link next to the "Posted: <date>" field.

I've added this feature so you can now search the current topic or forum (with or without subforums) from the quick search.

I want to reply to this thread to make another suggestion regarding the quick-search feature.
As it is now quick-search always defaults to "search in All Available". However, often when I am in a Topic, I don't want to search in "All Available", but rather that topic. This is especially true for the larger topics which consist of many pages.
Therefore I would like to suggest that the quick-search default to search in the current 'level' of the forums.
What I mean is this: When you're in the top level of the forums "All available" should be selected,
When you're in a sub forum "This Forum" should be selected,
and when you're in a thread/topic "This Topic" should be selected.

Hmm, I'm not sure if changing the default option is the best idea as it would likely confuse people who are used to the current behaviour. It would probably also increase the number of duplicate topics posted as people would start to get no results when searching.
