The stage3 tarball is already configured for your system. There is not much to do for this stage, but it is a very good idea to update your system to the newest available packages.
Note: If you have not already edited /etc/make.conf to fit your specifications, now would be a good time to do so.
Code listing 14.1: Getting up-to-date
# emerge sync
# emerge -up world
(lists the packages to be installed)
# emerge -u world

I think that a comment is needed here. This step may look innocent, but it can take hours to complete... What do you think? Is there an easy way to list the before-and-after versions to see if it is worth the wait? |

The middle command (emerge -pu world) will show you the tools that will be updated, together with their current version (in []) and the new version (just after the packagename). |

What I do, most of the time, is do an stage 1, 2 install, and don't bother with the emerge -u world in stage 3. First priority at that moment is for me to get the system booting all on it's own (so.. finishing the installation)
Once it can boot, I do the emerge -u world.... it's purely psychological, but it works for me. |
