Yes, it is not easy to decide which module is necessary ... for example: the "synaptics" in your old INPUT_DEVICES= is only for very old touchpads (not using i2c) ... but it leads to a non-working touchpad if you have a newer on ... some other need CONFIG_MOUSE_ELAN_I2C ... and some - like yours - dont need it ... but I had never the problem that CONFIG_MOUSE_ELAN_I2C had prevented HID_MULTITOUCH from using the touchpad ...
So this is new to me ... and another point in the "great checklist" for touchpads ... in the last 4 years I have learned all the stuff from the feedback of users with such a device (because I dont have) ... So I say thank you very much for your feedback !
