I assume the DNS entry was one problem, probably costed too much to maintain it with only a few people using it and no ad revenue?

I do wonder how much DNS lookups cost for a site like that Or even gentoo.org. Some registrars count how many lookups you get and the more lookups the higher your fee is. Can't win.

That didn't happen because OTW went down slowly. Users had time to get used to the idea and set up OTW20.com

There was notice of it going read only, then a month after that it was hidden from normal users.
In the interests of full disclosure, there is a "delete this forum button" but its never been tested and nobody wanted to try it on the live database :)

I've been trying to word this without naming any names ...

OTW20.com had a dynamic IP. Updating the DNS record when it changed was a manual task.
Whoever did that had an attack of real life. The IP changed one day and OTW20.com failed to resolve, so OTW20.com was gone.

mrbassie,

Respondents quoting that, from memory or the wayback machine, may go the same way as OTW.

Be careful how you respond.

If we can blame RedHat, want don't we blame systemd? After all, when OTW is back again it will be a matter of time before systemd-otwd will be written and it's existence will start a flamewar on OTW ;-)

I think this is a very good suggestion.

From what I remember, Off the Wall was in practice a public chatroom that a small group of regulars used for talking to each other. I think at most two of them posted elsewhere, and the majority seemed to no longer be Gentoo users. I think I saw more people in OTW 2.0 than in the original one.

Personally, I wasn't bothered by OTW's existence. To me, it was just an odd corner of the forums. I used to read the threads for entertainment, but would never think of posting there. I'm not interested in policing something I don't use, so I wouldn't have thought of reporting OTW posts either.

But OTW has close to zero chance of ever coming back, regardless of any poll.

OTW had value only here. Once separated, it's value was zero, and in order to grow, it had to forget about its kinship. Instead, the train refused to move beyond the blue yonder, and faded into obscure.

I wasn't asking for a quote ned, I'd love a theoretical as to how saying something negative e.g about west bromwich albion could in anyway be construed to be offensive.

mrbassie,

These things rapidly turn from discussion on the subject (west bromwich albion), to attacks on the subject to personal attacks on the posters.
The root cause is that its all a matter of opinion. There are no facts to cite.

For most posters there are no problems but there are extremests everywhere that discussion in based solely on opinion.

I liked OTW, it served a purpose (if only as a place to drop the posts of ill-mannered repeat offending trolls) and offered some comedic relief - there were some genuinely funny contributors along with the other strange assorted fruits in there.
It was no place for the thin-skinned or easily offended, though, and I suppose there was some risk to hosting it here.

You'll never get it back, for the same reason you'll never see reruns of 'Love Thy Neighbour' or 'til death do us part'.

So I didn't bother voting.

It is what it is.

From Turtle's link to the waybackmachine.

Want to talk about Linux issues not related to Gentoo? Or anything else not related to Gentoo? Post it here.

Somehow all of the non-Gentoo linux threads, and threads about various members' projects have been forgotten. Along with many discussions over the years about using various hardware under Linux.

Content and certain camaraderie has left with otw, but, it is what it is.

That's certainly unfortunate side of OTW closure.

If anyone wants to pull some project or hardware related topic out of OTW, then please make a post here so we can try to dig those up and move to proper subforum.

This leads me to wonder why otw was yeeted to begin with, so talking about politics being like totally toxic omg has been suggested. I can't think of anything I remember that could engender litigation (apart from taking the piss out of greta, conceivably). I'm putting it down to criticism of the direction of the project however. Criticism's which are admittedly above my head.

Well, as far as we know, someone saw a bunch of people throwing shit at each other and thought it's a bad thing, even though they kept coming back for more.
Translating to English:
Mr (or more likely Mrs) paragon of virtue got offended on behalf of all participants who wouldn't do that themselves, twatter style.

I think the forum member that was hosting the otw20.com site seemed to suddenly have some kinda life crisis preventing him from being online or wiped and reformatted his life or worse passed away.
All his social medial and other activity has been dark since around July 2023, regrettably I dont think it was a cost issue or he would have responded on reddit or instagram etc.
I tried to reach out to him a few different ways and no response, I hope he is OK.
