I used musicmatch in windows and I really liked how when you opened it all the songs that were in a specified folder were there to pick form. Is there something similar as a plugin for xmms or another program? |

There are some much more full-featured applications that serve the same purpose. Search on freshmeat.net for 'mp3 database' sometime, or look at the one by the makers of Grip (the gtk cd ripper).
However, I'd recommend playing with JuK first. It's pretty nice.
Review of JuK: http://dot.kde.org/1055452455/
JuK homepage: http://www.slackorama.net/cgi-bin/content.pl?juk [edit: correct link. dead though?]
[edit: here's one more good alternative, but I haven't tried it: http://mark.stosberg.com/Tech/linux_music_players.html]
I seem to remember a Linux Journal or slashdot article that reviewed two or three of the more current ones (JuK included), but I didn't see a link when I made a quick search. Dig a little harder, and you'll find it. It's worth reading. |

|
|
Also, PyTone is really nice. No ebuild but wasn't coplicated to install, and works well if you don't mind a curses interface.
Zinf has issues (IMO): frequently blows up when trying to work with playlists, very slow to scan / build it's database, shows quirky behavior on some VBR files (ie, read: most of the ones I make from my own CD's... ), and worst of all (IMO): only indexes on artist.
PyTone scanned a 6000 file tree of 650 directories in under 5 minutes (on a 700mhz duron) and produced a database indexed by artist, album, genre, decade, and file location. Using it's built in mpg123/321 interface, it only needs about 24meg of memory compared to XMMS using 55meg. And, the interface is easy / intuitive to navigate.
Anyone willing to do an eBuild for PyTone? (I may try it myself, but I have zero knowledge on creating eBuilds at this point...)

To revive this old thread: there is in the meantime an ebuild for PyTone 2.3.1 which should remove the old debug bug
See https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=70450 for details ...
