but of recent i am getting no sound in mplayer either? and it gives this pain Quote: | audio_setup: Can't open audio device /dev/sound/dsp: No such file or directory
Could not open/initialize audio device -> no sound.
Audio: no sound |

Do you have the right permissions set on your system. To have access, your user(s) need to be in the audio group.
Also, if you're running KDE, it's possible that artsd is running on your system, occupying your audio device. In that case, turn it off, or use the arts plugin for mplayer.
EDIT: you could also install alsa-oss, and use OSS emulation _________________ Registered linux user #341804

my user is a member of "users, wheel, audio"
and i have installed the alsa-oss actually it so happened that i had lost my grub so i reinstalled it with the gentoo cd ,just the grub installation steps from the installation.
i dint do nything 4 the user so i think it lost perms( i also couldnt su so i had to add the wheel grp) but even now the sound isnt working.........and 4 some reason mplayer(0.92) wouldnt recompile with alsa support. _________________ Pdict - dockable dictionary client for linux

It might be necessary to check the permissions on /dev/sound/* as it could be that the group 'audio' no longer has access (as in the default install).
For the mplayer problem, you could try unmerging it, then remerge it. This sometimes solves strange problems like the one you have. _________________ Registered linux user #341804

type: mplayer -ao help
this command shows all available sound plugins in mplayer, check if any alsa plugin is there. If there is one, type mplayer -ao <plugin_name> <filename>
alsa by default doesn't use /dev/dsp, unless you enable oss emulation
did you enable alsa-oss emulation in /etc/modules.d/alsa??
good luck |

nothing has worked
please help!!!
/dev/sound/dsp doesnt even exist!!!!! i have used alsa-oss emulation and mplayer 0.92 isnt compiling with alsa support......what i am now thinking is installing it manually......but since the codecs are in /usr/lib/win32/ how do i compile mplayer to use that directory as default for codecs????? _________________ Pdict - dockable dictionary client for linux

which mplayer are you trying to emerge??
did you emerge alsa-lib?? if not, maybe you should give it a try, and then reemerge mplayer. |

Hi
i had the same problem but i solved it. I merged mplayer 1.0pre3-3.3.2
now i can use the alsa-lib 1.0.3b-r2. With the old mplayer i got the same error "Could not open /dev/sound ..."
Try it |

I have the same problem.
[ebuild R ] media-video/mplayer-0.92-r1 -3dfx +3dnow +X -aalib +alsa +arts -dga -directfb -dvb -dvd +encode +esd -fbcon -ggi +gif -gnome +gtk +gtk2 +jpeg -lirc -matrox +oggvorbis +opengl +oss -samba +sdl +sse +svga +truetype +xmms +xv 0 kB
Tryed to re-emerge it too (this time with no gtk, arts & esd support as I dont need them)..still the same.
But -ao help doesnt show alsa(9) & it cant use it too. mplayer over oss works. I have 2.6.4 kernel with alsa compiled into it. other apps use alsa fine.
Maybe it's a bug in 0.92-r1 package? Can I emerge a newer version (how) or do I have to d/l sources and compile it "manually"? |
