Used the docs and helpful notes from avenj to get gentoo installed on my P3 using the p3 grp disks. Installation of KDE went well. Installing gnome is not working properly.
still using the USE="bindist" emerge -k packagename results in grabbing a lot of packages from the net.

I ended up getting almost all of gnome installed and ended up with gnome-session and gnome.2.2.1 left to do (emerge -p gnome only has these two left showing now)

now when compiling gnome session, it appears to hang up trying to write to /etc/xml/catalog and complains of
Code:
file:///etc/xml/catalog:1: error: Start tag expected, '<' not found

^
file:///etc/xml/catalog:1: error: Document is empty

It just will not get passed this.
tried the fixpackages command and let it run. no help.

any ideas on how to get gnome going .
any all pointers/links/have you read this post yet ? things are appreciated.

have a look at this thread . looks like scrollkeeper and a docbook package are the culprit.
