Hans Reiser have finally posted a nice summary on status of Reiser4 :
http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=reiserfs&m=105899417220373&w=2

Togheter with a nice benchmark V4 vs V3, causing excessive drooling :
http://www.namesys.com/benchmarks/v4marks.html

Yes, give it to me...

I think that says it all right there ;)

I still think I'm going to hold off for awhile though (at least until 2.6.1). The thought of having my data get messed up gives me a headache :P

Any word from the kernel maintainers on the status for inclusion? I thought they missed the deadline for 2.6, but don't quote me on that.

Must... Create spare partition... Must try Reiser4.

The thing that got me hooked was the fact that Hans (Reiser) said that performance was now okay for public testing. Only stability left *Evil Grin*

I just sent an email to Larry McAvoy at bitmover -- he has created a patch for Reiser4 against 2.6.0, and I told him all you gentoo nuts would be happy to test it. :D

When I get it I'll post here...

I've been drooling over this for a while now, and I just hope that the jump to reiser4 will be as big of a jaw dropper for me as it was moving from ext3 to reiserfs.

currently on ext3 (built my system a while ago)
i will be re-doing my system (do fstab & settings, copy entire system to another harddrive, format reiser4, copy back and do the other harddrives as reiser4)
will take a bit of work due to encrypted filesystem (easyest way would be to de-crypt copy over and then re-encrypt when system works ok.)
i hope it's as jaw dropping as modal says it is.

He wasn't being sarcastic. I don't think there will be patches for 2.4

well 2.4 is stable, 2.5 and 2.6 are both development still, so surely there will be patches for 2.4.

unless 2.5 suddenly is considered stable and is "official"

i hope there are 2.4 patches, i don't want to use an "unstable" kernel in order to have it, they won't get the highest amount of users if they don't include 2.4 patches, the majority of people use 2.4 i think.

EDIT:
i found this on LWN:
Quote:

Reiser4 is the latest incarnation of the ReiserFS filesystem. It is not simply an upgrade; Reiser4 has been redesigned and reimplemented from the beginning. It is a completely different filesystem than the ReiserFS (also known as "Reiser3") found in the 2.4 kernel; should it be included, the next stable kernel will contain both Reiser3 and Reiser4, as separate options.

anyway i checked some mailing lists and it will be in a 2.5 release as a seperate option, so you have a choice between Reiser3 and Reiser4.

Reiser4 is not expected to reach full stability before the 2.6.0 release, and it relies on many 2.6 technologies which would have to be backported for a 2.4 release of Reiser4 - I doubt that it would be worth the effort.

There are no official plans for a Reiser4 2.4 backport - at all.
