hal/dbus/udev not recognising my dvd drive

somehow there's no hal process that should poll for the dvd drive, so that any kind of automount daemon ala gnome-volume-manager or ivman isn't responding when i insert a dvd... what could be the problem here?
usb disks mount just fine with gnome-volume-manager when i insert those, and manually mounting the dvd also works.

Is the device (or any of its aliases) mentioned in /etc/fstab?
