just installed it; the motif version.
I have sun jre 1.4 installed and blackdown jdk

with blackdown vm in my path, I've got classpath probelems.
Pointing to the sun jre solved it:

./eclipse -vm /opt/sun-jre-1.4/bin/java

everything runs fine.

try it!

how fast does it run on your system ? I did try some beta gtk version quite some time ago, and i was not really impressed by the speed back then (read: not useable speed ;)

but .. back then slower cpu, and gentoo didn't exist yet .. so :)

well, just installed it; but it feels fast enough. (athlon 1000, 512mb)
but I'm planning to do a lot of plugins, (tomcat etc) so if it still acceptable fast?

(I have a slight feeling however that Eclipse on windows was faster)

I'm running the motif version on my gentoo box. I've got Sun JDK 1.3.1 installed, and am using eclipse in conjunction with tomcat.

To integrate tomcat download the plugin here: http://www.sysdeo.com/eclipse/tomcatPlugin.html

Speed-wise it is great. I'm running a Athlon 1800XP, 512MB DDR. It actually launches about twice as fast on my maching than WebSphere takes to lauch on co-workers P4s.

i'm just playing with eclipse, and somehow i can't compile packages ;) how are the .class files created ? it does not seem to use the standard javac compiler, and it only asks for a jre, no jdk !?

Eclipse has it's own incremental compiler. As you write the source the programm updates the class files. As soon as you safe your source the .class files are ready.
