I've recently installed a fresh Gentoo 1.4_rc4 on my PC. Now I've completed to emerge KDE-3.1.2 but I ran into a serious problem. Whenever I try to start KDE (no matter if as root or normal user), the KDE splash screen comes up and gets till the third icon, even playing KDE's start sound when it the KDE crash dialog comes up reporting that ksmserver has crashed (SIGSEGV), throwing me back into console.

Here is the output from .xsession-errors:
Code:
startkde: Starting up...
kbuildsycoca running...
mcop warning: user defined signal handler found for SIG_PIPE, overriding
ICE default IO error handler doing an exit(), pid = 2350, errno = 0
startkde: Shutting down...
KLauncher: Exiting on signal 1
warning: leaving MCOP Dispatcher and still 9 object references alive.

  - Arts::Synth_PLAY
  - Arts::StereoVolumeControl
  - Arts::StereoEffectStack
  - Arts::Synth_BUS_DOWNLINK

  - Arts::MidiManager
warning: leaving MCOP Dispatcher and still 74 types alive.
ICE default IO error handler doing an exit(), pid = 2316, errno = 0
startkde: Running shutdown scripts...
startkde: Done.

And here is the result of a backtrace:

KDE applications run fine for me under twm or windowmaker btw.

My flags:
CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-mcpu=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="-mcpu=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe"
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"

I hope someone can help me out of this :-/

I have the same problem, on an Athlon-Tbird with the following settings:
Code:

CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu"
CFLAGS="-march-athlon-tbird -=3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
CXXFLAGS=(... same as CFLAGS ...)
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"

If I interpret the output from gdb correctly, the error has something to do with a function in libpthread.so called from ksmserver... maybe that library needs rebuilding? Unfortunately, I don't which package it might be in. (Sounds like something deep down in the guts of the OS. 8O )

Any ideas, anyone??

If you have installed gentoolkit, you can verify the dependency of a file from a certain package:

Code:

qpkg -f /usr/lib/libpthread.so

This answers you with this:

Code:

sys-libs/glibc *

So, you are right, gdb gave you a call from the deepest seas of you'r OS. The question here could be: Some of you have relaxed CFLAGS for your bootstrapping systems, and have the same problem..?

[/code]

Thanks, that gentoolkit thing looks interesting. For future reference, that is... :wink: Because meanwhile, I have rebuilt from scratch without the
Code:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"
and with
Code:
CFLAGS="-march=athlon-tbird -O2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer"
(btw, the "-=3" above should have been "-O3") and now it runs without a problem.

However, I still don't know if the culprit was
[ ] too aggressive optimization settings (although those I used were called "safe" on www.freehackers.org)
[ ] an unstable package
[ ] my own stupidity :wink:

(or maybe [x] all of the above... :wink: )

I also have this problem. Are any of you using NPTL? Also are you using the nvidia drivers? If so which version?

O.k. I am using gcc 3.3 and agresive Pentium IV optimizations for my bootstrap system and everything else. I read on other forum topics about some problems regarding this kind of agressive optimizations and gcc 3.3.x against glibc. So, they recomend that you could still use gcc 3.3.x but with very low "hard optimizations" in order to compile only glibc 1.x and glibc 2.x. They still recomend to use gcc CVS 3.3.1 against the "unmasked" gcc 3.3 since they fix lot of bugs regarding glibc issues.

Cheers.

Is there an ebuild for the 3.3.1 CVS version? I've never been able to compile gcc on my own..

Hi everybody,

just to let you know: apparently someone in this forum has found a solution to our problem (the original one, about ksmserver -- I can't say anything about gcc-3.3, since I'm still using gcc-3.2.2): Downgrading from xfree-4.3.0-r3 to xfree-4.3.0-r2 did the trick (for them).

I can't yet confirm this, since it'll take quite some time on my old machine to rebuild xfree, but maybe this saves some of you some time tracking down the bug... :)

Once again thanks to you, shell_ramix, for the hint about gentoolkit -- although my own search for a solution was fruitless, etcat and qpkg came in handy a couple of times!!

Cheers, and happy rebuilding...

EDIT:

Almost forgot to tell you (in case you're still interested): Yes, it worked! And the enhanced optimization settings and GLIBC/GCC versions are no problem, it's just xfree-4.3.0-r3 that doesn't work.

I tried downgrading to xfree-4.2.0. This is not a good solution, IMO. On my machine it broke so many libraries, I was forced to revert back to xfree-4.3.0-r3, nvidia 3123 driver set, and a nptl-less glibc.

not sure if you actually meant what you typed: The suggested solution was to downgrade to xfree-4.3.0-r2, *not* to xfree-4.2.0 (which I readily believe would break a lot of things... 8O ).

With xfree-4.3.0-r2, I was able to use all other packages in their latest available "~x86" versions without any problems, so far...

(About the question if my glibc uses nptl or not, I'm not sure... so probably it doesn't, I guess --- would that be activated by a specific package version or by a USE flag or something?)

Cheers,
Lars

Aggh, I'm a moron. I guess that -r2 on the end is what made me think 4.2.0-r2... Anyways, I found another solution. The absolute latest xfree in portage 4.3.99.8 something. I'm happy now. :D
