|
I've just followed the Framebuffer & Bootsplash howto and thought it was all very cool.
I have been fiddling with the progress bar settings, and couldn't find all the information I was looking for, so I thought I'd start this thread to help other people do as I am doing, and for people to aid people doing it too.
This is what I wanted to achieve, and how I achieved it:
- A LILO splash screen
Difficulty: Very easy
How: I followed this forum thread.
- A Bootsplash (graphics for the boot messages)
Difficulty: Medium
How: I followed this forum thread.
- A graphical framebuffer (an image behind the console)
Difficulty: Medium
How: I followed this forum thread (same as above).
- A mouse cursor on the console
Difficulty: Easy
How: Install GPM, edit the GPM settings to point to your mouse device, and then add it to the startup scripts
Code: | emerge gpm
nano /etc/init.d/gpm
rc-update add gpm default |
A progress bar for the bootsplash
Difficulty: Hard
How: Add the following append to /etc/lilo.conf
Code: | append="splash=silent" |
This will show the 'silent' bootsplash graphic on boot, pressing F2 changes it to verbose mode.
Add the following code to the eerror() section in /sbin/functions.sh
Code: | echo "verbose" > /proc/splash |
This will change to verbose mode if there's an error
This forum thread seems to be trying to figure out how to get progress bars working. And micha has made a patch package, available on his site, to try and make things easy for everyone.
If anyone knows any other information about this, please contribute.
GoboLinux-like verbose messages under the progress bar in the silent mode bootsplash
GoboLinux has a very nifty bootsplash. It has a silent mode bootsplash, with a progress bar, but that's not all... it has a very cool fading verbose mode at the bottom... it displays the first couple of lines nice and brightly, and fades out as they go up the screen, so you get about 5 lines of the verbose mode under the progress bar. looks very nice, and I'd like to know how this is done.
If you know how this is done, please contribute here

well, at the moment I am at work with no linux box nearby so I can't test it. But as soon as I get home I'm going to take a look at this: http://lpp-themes.sourceforge.net/
I really think this is what we are both looking for (yes, I also NEEED that fading verbose messages during booting) |

I think you've found it. I've searched the GoboLinux mailing list archive, and I see several references for the Linux Progress Patch, as opposed to Bootsplash... but it's taken me ages to get Bootsplash working, so do I really have to swap yet again? or can LPP be a patch for bootsplash? |

I thought that the linux progress patch was for lilo and not available for grub. I was confused by the dfference.

don't ask me. I propably know as much as you do. I will check and try it all tonight. I really hope it works. And if it doesn't work, well we could always ask the gobolinux guys. But I'm pretty sure this thing is going to work. I keep you updated. |

it's gonna be more of a operation then i thought. It's applying the patch. Because my used kernel is already patched on the framebuffer side for the bootsplash, I'm wondering how this patch will handle the things the bootsplash patch does. At login or at the start of init it disapears propably...well, kernel is done compiling, now I need to edit the rc scripts because this package was made for debian.
By the way, the "always GPL political correct" guys from debian were not that political correct by using the code of lpp (linux proces patch), improve it but not letting the original producer of the patch him know of the improvement and applying it in debian......well, haven't heard both sides of the story, but Tobias Mathes is really pissed.
Well, I'll keep you updated in this topic. |

I just had a email conversation with the maintaner of the lpp project. Version 0.4.2 is out, but isn't working that great. The project is actually kind of dying.
But, that doesn't mean that we can't pick it up again. So, we are looking at the options. Eventually the code propably needs a rewrite. First I need some more information about lpp, because I'm not getting it to work (which is normal beacuase something is missing in 0.4.2).
Well, gobolinux has just been burned to cd and I'm going to boot it in a minute. Check if I can get some infromation out of it.
Keep you updated.
Oh, he also told there was some gentoo guy who had contacted him before.....anyone? |

Any luck on getting lpp to work? I really would like to have that!
Yesterday I tried to install the patch for the progressbar (at http://www.aichler.net/gentoo/bootsplash/).
The progressbar is working, but on bootup the animations are not being played (also no "press F2" message appears)...
On shutdown all seems fine: animation is played + "press F2" message appeared.
Tonight I'll play some more to see what is wrong...
If there is something to try for lpp, I can give it a shot (once I have figured out the missing animations at bootup) |

Anyone who has this working under gentoo?
It would be nice at all. |

Recently, ELPP (or Extended Linux Progress Patch) has been ported to the 2.6 kernels, but I'm not sure what kind of stability it has yet. Last time I tried it, it froze my computer at boot. Being a test kernel, though, stuff like that is bound to happen. I'd suggest waiting until 2.6 becomes stable... |

ELPP works for me if its applied to a vanilla test kernel, when it was included in the love kernel there were some evil framebuffer patches that locked the computer up at boot-up.
