|
|
I am brand new to gentoo - was running debian. I have started an install from the stage1 tarball. I have been following the instructions in the install guide, and have got to step 11 (run scripts/bootstrap.sh).
Unfortunately a make of texinfo fails roughly as follows (I am copying the console output from another machine)
../makeinfo/makeinfo -I. texinfo.txi
make[2]: *** [texinfo.info] *** Illegal Instruction
make[2]: *** Deleting file `texinfo.info`
make[2]: Leaving directory `/var/tmp/portage/texinfo-4.5/work/texinfo-4.5/doc
What can I do now (other than try and start from a later stage)?
I had a quick look at the texinfo file, but its enormous and there is no way I am going to find any error in that. |

Seems like pretty safe flags.. (assuming you have an athlon xp ) The second most obvious question is if you have enough free disk space? |

This thread says there is no texinfo package. I have it - its just that it seems to go wrong during the turning of textinfo.txi into an info file. |

I am not at the machine at the moment so can't check - but there is no indication in the error message that this is the case - and after its occurred and I run the script again it gets to exactly the same place, so I assume this is not the problem.
I assume all the action takes place in /var - which because I am rebuilding from my old debian system is in lvm and a separate reiserfs filesystem (I did mkreiserfs on it to initialise it before starting the build) of about 1.5G |

I got exactly the same problem. I "solved" it by using "-march=athlon" instead of
"-march=athlon-xp", although I checked that I _do_ have an Athlon XP.
The following bug fix contains (I believe) the correct solution:
https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20173
It's a problem of the kernel not recognizing properly some XP processors. |
