I submitted a patch for eog to Bugzilla a few weeks ago, bug 114108. Can anyone confirm that it works and close the bug?

I want to thank you for your efforts on this, I won't get a chance to try this as I already moved to gnome 2.14 I'll Check to see if the issue is here as well.

They fixed the problem in the 2.14 release by casting to guchar*, but now EOG simply closes when reading metadata! No segmentation fault or error message of any kind is printed. I might have to open a new bug, but I don't have any details about the crash.

Hah, it wasn't a segfault or any such thing. I had to zealously break at all calls to gtk_main_quit() to find out what was going on. If EOG receives "access denied" trying to read an image, it just exits without any sort of useful error message. Should this be considered a bug? I don't know enough about the project to make it continue processing.

I would consider it a bug since it seems unusual for an application to quit on access denied. Even if they made it that way on purpose, the worst they will do is mark the bug report as INVALID or WONTFIX. So I suggest you just report it since you have nothing to lose. ;)
