I was wondering that myself and the security stuff on the forums is a bit behind too. Is the same guy responsible? If so I hope he's OK. pjp post the security bulletins at the forum most time, not sure who does GWN though. You here pjp?

Do you really believe "scheduled server maintenance" is the cause? I suspect April Fool's Day. Today is March 31 and the delay means GWN will be released on April 1.
Many Internet sites post false news on April 1. (KDE at
http://www.kde.org was a good example.) I do realize that the end of the month March might be a good time for server maintenance and that possibly Gentoo does not observe April Fool's Day.
So it is only a short time until I find out if I became an April Fool on March 24, when I believed the maintenance story. It is now already April 1 in some time zones (it is 6:20 PM Eastern US (GMT-5) now).
Update It seems KDE doesn't have a joke this year. Well, April 1 isn't over yet . . .

We don't observe April Fool's Day. In fact, we sign a contract stating that we won't have any sense of humor.
That's why we have very morbid and serious URLs like
seemant's FAQ

I'm with you PowerFactor!! Laughing nervously . . .
I'm usually good for jokes of all shapes and sizes. But this one really caught me off guard. I really don't think it is funny. Oh well! Maybe I will next week.

The GWN was actually just updated to state that it's an April Fool's joke per order of drobbins. He didn't think it was funny.
Oh well.

I'm more out of it than you are, I promise. I read the GWN on the website, right? Then I'm like, Oh my GOD!!!! and I open up my email client and a couple of web browsers so I can protest vociferously. Just to make sure I know what I'm writing about, I go back to read the announcement.
Naturally enough, my heart skipped about ten or so beats all told from oxygen deprivation due to laughter.
Though I DO have to call into question the idea of mixing serious security updates and tips and tricks and stuff with such a heartstopping joke.

out of curiosty (and hope I dont sound like an idiot in the process :p) what effect would using something like a srpm do to compliance? As far as I know (here comes the possible idiot part lol) are not srpm's just the source packaged? So in effect you would just be switching from tar.gz to srpm, you could still compile from source and USE flags etc. Or am I missing something fundamental?
I am not saying that Gentoo has to be in all ways LSB compliant or switch to rpm just curious

You guys should have seen my face when I receive the GWN for translation some time before it was officially out! I was like, WTF?? I read it about 3 times, I even started a post on the Portuguese forum until I was quoting some pars and I realized the date.. I laughed for like 10 minutes, banged my head agains the wall a couple of times =) It was for sure ont of the best april fool's story's ever =)
Too bad Drobbins didn't found it funny. I think it's damn funny, hehe. It already made it to slashdot! Now let's watch all the other sites for some jokes =) Slashdot uses to be pretty cool, google and freshmeat also use to have some nice stuff. Let's wait =)

This is kinda like the 4th of July when I was a kid. We'd go all over the county looking to see what kind of fireworks each town would have. Very exciting..

I sympathize with the heart stoppage feeling; I had about 1/4 second where my chest got tight, I didn't draw or release a breath, my hands started going numb, it was a total physical reaction. The emotions that ran through my head; 'oh man I finally found the linux distro that fit me perfectly now they're gonna *#?! it all up' all nonverbal of course then I realized it had to be an april fool's joke, you can't throw out the project's cornerstone then I read the whole paragraph and felt much better. then saw the 'note this is a joke' part.
It certainly made for some drama. I definitely think it was a good idea to add the last line, a lot of readers might know nothing about April Fool's day. Gentoo is in a precarious position, lots of new users and attention. I felt the little notice at the bottom was a nice touch, that way we got the big emotions from the joke, but we also knew right away all was still well in portage-land.
