Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

Hi,

i am afraid unless you get a bios for your laptop that does support booting from USB Devices there is NO way
to achieve what you want.

I have the same Q.
My laptop supports the USB boot.
But LiveCD 2006.0 does not show me USB HDD as a choice for partitioning.

What else can I do?

Maybe you should load the correct modules for USB, with

Code: Select all

modprobe usbcore
? did you look at what

Code: Select all

dmesg | more
says ? does it show your drive as /dev/ubb ? If not, you MUST modprobe the correct modules.
the map is not the territory.

I can see the drive when booted from LiveCD, but not when I boot off it.
It is /dev/sdb.
Root is on /dev/sdb3 and it cannot mount. I have used genkernel during graphical install off the LiveCD.
I will try to compile USB support into kernel and will report here.
