|
|
| Before I started using gentoo (I am a n00blar) I was using Redhat 8.0.92 (Phoebe). Anyways, the Gnome version on Redhat had an excellent default pointer set that had some really gorgeous transparent pointers. It was probably some of the nicest I've seen on any operating system and I was wondering if anybody knows how I can get that under Gentoo. This isn't really a big deal, I just thought it was a gorgeous desktop and would like to replicate that part. If anyone has any ideas please tell me how. Thanks. |

Looks nice, eh? That's the default pointer in XFree86 4.2.99. | Code: | | env USE=~x86 emerge -u xfree |
After all the threads about how to get the old-style pointers back, I was starting to think I was the only one who liked it! |

I would like them more if someone was kind enough to make a set out of these:
http://jimmac.musichall.cz/i.php3?ikony=71
I tried and failed. The process is really long. I think it'd be seriously kickass though and as far as I know no one else is even using them yet (asside from jimmac). |

I've made a cursor theme from the ones on Jimmac's page, you can get them here:
http://sundown.adsl.dk/jimmac.tar.gz
I've been using them for a week or so now, hope Jimmac wil get a round to releasing them all soon |

Thanks, using it now and it looks great. But one question: Is there a proper way to install it? I copied the contents of the archive to .icons/ and renamed the jimmac-dir to default, is there a better way? |

To install the cursor theme, copy the contents of the archive to
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/
and then edit
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/default/index.theme |

Since XFree 4.3.*, the cursors are now kept in /usr/share/cursors/.
You should find the default/index.theme there, then just edit the index file as sunny suggested above.
For the transparent cursors, I believe they are called 'whiteglass'.
Good luck.
[EDIT}
Duh!, just noticed you're looking to install the 'jimmac' cursors. Unpack them into ~/.icons, then adjust the afore mentioned index.theme, to use jimmac.

Hmm, if I do that everybody on the system would have to use the jimmac cursors (and since they are only in my home directory, all users besides me would fall back to the core cursors). Is there some user specific file, like ~/.icons/default/index.theme? _________________ [img:39112bbc59]http://www.gamers-portal.de/images/yay.gif[/img:39112bbc59] |

Got it!
| Code: |
# cd ~/.icons
# tar -xvzf /path/to/jimmac/icons/jimmac.tar.gz
# ln -s jimmac default
|
That will link the jimmac cursors to the default. You will probably have to log out of X to completely refresh the cursors, though.

Thanks, that did it! I really like the jimmac cursors, they look like the X core cursors but anti aliased and with a SMALL shadow. Simple, clean, usable. _________________ [img:39112bbc59]http://www.gamers-portal.de/images/yay.gif[/img:39112bbc59] |

I have been using that cursor theme for a while now and I really like them, but I have a question; where can I get the PNG images of the wait cursor? On jimmac's page (http://jimmac.musichall.cz/i.php3?ikony=71) there is only the wait_0001 image, but the cursor is animated.
Thank you in advance |

| Jimmac cursor icons look exactly like Industrial cursor theme found in ximian-artwork package. Try it out. |

Yes, emerge ximian-artwork, it will install icons into /usr/share/cursors/xfree/Industrial directory. To use them, edit your .Xdefaults file, create it if it does not exist.
It should look like this
| Code: |
Xcursor.theme: Industrial
Xcursor.size:15
|
Of course change the size to whatever you want. Restart X and you should have your cursor theme applied.
Try out also other cursor themes, some should already be installed as they come with xfree package. Look inot subdirectories of /usr/share/cursors/xfree/ you may like whiteglass. Also do emerge -s cursor to see other available cursor themes that are in portage. |

Where is this file? I tried ~/.Xdefaults but that didnt change the cursor. I'm running Xfree 4.3.0 btw.

Yes, I meant ~/.Xdefaults. Did you restart X? What WM are you using? |

This should work without any problems in Gnome
Check if you do not make any stupid typo. Also make sure that theme you are trying to use is installed in /usr/share/cursors/xfree/.
This thread deals with cursor changes, although it does not provide much moer than what I wrote here:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=151310&highlight=cursor+theme
You can try setting cursror theme globally in
usr/share/cursors/xfree/default/index.theme, but I have not done it myself.
Hope this helps. |

setting the cursor globally didnt work either, but then after much faffing around i discovered a rogue ~/.icons directory that was empty but still seemed to be throwing X off the scent. anyways deleting that solved the problem,
cheers for the tips, my desktop is now as pretty as ever! |

Does not work for me...my ~/.icons is not empty but I still removed it form ~/.
I also tried to change the theme globally. No luck.At the beginning of the session(XFCE4) I see a different cursor which immediately disappears.I also tried Gnome. It doesn't work there neither.
Any suggestions? |
