Does anyone have news about waimea? The latest news from their website is:

Quote:

Sat Dec 14 14:21:54 CET 2002

I'm currently writing a new style engine for waimea and a new menu system, but nothing of this has yet been committed to CVS. If you like to try something called merged windows try the current CVS. Merged windows is sort of the same as tabs (like in Fluxbox).

I'm going away on vacation today and wont be back until mid January, so no development of waimea will be done during this period and I wont be able to answer mail as rapidly as normal.

David Reveman ( david at waimea.org )

And CVS seems dead, although the new 'merge' feature works quite well.

Does anyone have any news about this project?

Yeah, I emailed him a week or so ago, and he replied fast then. I think he just had a good holiday (don't we all want one) and took his time settling back into the swing of things.

Waimea lives!

Well, sort of. Waimea itself is *dead* but diehard waimea fans have forked the project:

Because there haven't been any updates in a while, or because there was an official announcement? Seems odd that it would be dead but the website still available.

Neither. The author seems quite dead. No email answers even to emails specifically asking on whether he would care a fork or not, etc by dedicated waimea fans. Maybe the author abandoned the project or maybe totally forgot about it. No one knows as he does not answer his email anymore. No official announcement, but if the project was abandoned then.... This is what I got out of conversing with the people responsible for the fork before there was a fork (when it was being considered a few weeks ago).

I sent him an email a short while ago and he seemed to still be working on the program....I had requested information regarding a desired feature and he replied. Not right away but within the week.

Hmmmmm, now I wonder.

Oh well. I was planning on trying a new wm soon.

As mentioned in the other thread, 0.1 is out and here's an ebuild for it:
Code:
# Copyright 1999-2003 Gentoo Technologies, Inc.
# Distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License v2
# $Header:  $

DESCRIPTION="A language agnostic scriptable window manager based on Waimea."
SRC_URI="http://easynews.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/kahakai/${P}.tar.gz"
HOMEPAGE="http://kahakai.sf.net"

LICENSE="GPL-2"
SLOT="0"
KEYWORDS="~x86 ~sparc ~ppc"
IUSE=""

DEPEND="virtual/x11
   media-libs/imlib2
   virtual/xft
   ~dev-lang/swig-1.3.16"

RDEPEND=">=dev-lang/python-2.2.2"

S=${WORKDIR}/${P}
RESTRICT="nostrip"

PROVIDE="virtual/blackbox"

src_compile() {
   econf ${myconf} || die
   emake || die
}

src_install() {
   einstall || die
   dodoc doc/*

   dodir /etc/X11/Sessions
   echo "/usr/bin/kahakai" > ${D}/etc/X11/Sessions/kahakai
   chmod +x ${D}/etc/X11/Sessions/kahakai
}

To install do this (as root):

  1. Enable PORTDIR_OVERLAY in /etc/make.conf
  2. Save this ebuild as /usr/local/portage/x11-wm/kahakai/kahakai-0.1.ebuild
  3. Do
    Code:
    ebuild /usr/local/portage/x11-wm/kahakai/kahakai-0.1.ebuild digest

  4. Do
    Code:
    ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge kahakai

  5. In /etc/rc.conf change XSESSION to kahakai
  6. Restart x
  7. Enjoy

Notes:
There are no useflags as they all result in brokeness at the moment.

Edit:
Changed python dependency to 2.2.2+ as requested by the devs.
Edit 2:
Added RESTRICT="nostrip", to fix segfaults one of the devs was experiencing

Despite being dead, wiamea does rule.
I like it even better than openbox (seems
to be a little more light weight...or am i
wrong? Also, more styles available).
Do you find kahakai better? If so, in
what ways? I'm mildly irked that there
aren't many screenies of kahakai desktops
and styles...etc etc.

arr!

You could try idesktop for the icons and pypanel for a bar, both are in portage and both are nice eye candy ;)

Kahakai is awesome. I've been using it since version 0.4.

For icons... Well, I really don't find a big need for them, but if you really want them use iDesk. For a panel, I use PerlPanel, which is GTK+2 based, but you can take a look at PyPanel also.
