Does Gentoo need a face?

After reading this Slashdot artice which concerned Branden Robinson's first report as Debian Project Leader I started to wonder if Gentoo should have similar leadership.

With this new election, we'll see many interviews with Branden and many articles written about him and his goals. Do we have a forward face to the press or are we missing out on good press by not having one?

I'm not trying to criticize our current management for I am a true believer of Gentoo, but I am of the "post daniel robbins" era so I don't know how things have changed since that transition.

Have you ever heard of Martin Michlmayr?

We've had press coverage... Gentoo interviews tend to be either with the relevant manager (for genuine projects) or with pvdabeel (for hyped up bullshit that will never get anywhere). When we had a single leader (drobbins) it caused far more problems than it solved, so I doubt we'd go that way.

You see how long it's taking Debian to get their next release out the door! All the press releases they get and having a project leader doesn't seem to be moving things along any better does it? Ubuntu is on the verge of knocking Debian out!! (IMO)

Maybe not the best comparison :)

Actually, something interesting about that... Their project leader isn't anything to do with the releases. That's the release manager's job. I could post some sarcastic commentary about that, but I don't think I need to...

"that will never get anywhere"

Sounds more like an opinion to me.

I happen to be looking forward to some of Pieter's projects. Especially Gentoo/OpenSolaris.

You'll be looking forward to it for a long time. There is no Gentoo/OpenSlowaris port planned.

If the Gentoo project decides that it needs a face, you should try to obtain the services of this gentleman. Would do Gentoo's brand recognition no end of good.

I don't think we need a face.

ciaranm get your facts straight,

the project does exist, it's not official yet, but it's allready working and being tested by Opensolaris team members:

Finally someone putting ciaranm in his place when he is WRONG! That is nice to see.

i don't thing Gentoo needs a face in the singular, but I do sometimes wonder if it wouldn't hurt to present a clearer idea of the underlying structure to the userbase/community.

like, I know a few of the more public devs' names, or some of the herd leaders, but it's a little foggy how everyone fits together. things like Planet Gentoo and the Dev of the Week thing in the newsletter are a step in the right direction, but i still find it odd that I know more about the Debian hierarchy for example than my own distro's.

maybe it's just that Gentoo is a much less formal distribution or i haven't been paying enough attention.

An opinion? You mean "a notion or conviction founded on probable evidence"? That sounds quite possible, but if you meant "a personal belief or judgment that is not founded on proof or certainty" then perhaps what you have just stated is the opinion. An actual counterargument wouldn't be so much your personal belief to oppose that of ciaranm, but rather some sort of contrary proof. Namely, solid evidence that pvdabeel's "hyped up bullshit" will "get somewhere".

I suppose that makes more sense than doing it when he is right. Stonent, please take notes, this is the kind of counter-example I like to see.

In conclusion, I have a friend named Justin Rich who looks very friendly. I believe his face, combined with his wealth-connotating name, would make an excellent model for the open source movement.

No, that's a pvdabeel unsubstantiated press release. If you believed all the crap he put out, we'd've had pathspec and portage-ng over a year ago. Remember that pvdabeel isn't allowed to recruit anyone to work on this either.

Sadly, I'm not wrong. The above link is a perfect example of what my original comment in this thread was about.

I'm a bit confused here. So you're saying Gentoo has been lying about the things it's going to do or not do? How are we supposed to know what is "substantiated" vs. "unsubstantiated"? Or is this just some internal disagreement?

Gentoo didn't say anything. Pvdabeel said it, and Gentoo Weekly News (who are an unofficial news publication who do not necessarily follow the official Gentoo view on things) published it. Officially, we have no stance on OpenSlowaris and we have no plans to port things to it.

Thats the dumbest "mascott" and an everlasting testimate to the idiot who didnt know that cows are females and bulls are males...a constant reminder of just how dumb people can be.

We should have a contest for a new mascott...Linux seriously lacks aesthetic appeal. Its an uphill fight with the majority of people just not caring about their pixel placement.

I like tux. Gentoo mascott could probably be a gentoo penguin
