problem with realtek NIC [solved]

Realtek RTL8139/810X Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC - that's my network deviece and I think my problems with connecting to the net are caused by it.
I tried connecting with my integrated deviece and everything would be fine if it was deviece i wanted... so I think it's all about drivers
btw how can I install drivers eg. from floppy?
(I tried to enable 8139cp.ko & 8139too.ko but it doesnt work, I got two cards by realtek & one integrated, but in fact gentoo wants to work only with that integrated (onboard) one)

it's not typical because NICs seems to be ok, but they can't connect

dimril,

How many eth interfaces does

Code: Select all

ifconfig
show?
You can connect to the net with either but gentoo will only attempt to set up eth0 on its own.
You can control which is which bu module load order, if they need different modules.

If you are trying to modprobe or whatever, omit .ko - try modprobe 8139too or modprobe 8139cp

i got producer's drivers now (for 2.4 kernel, not 2.6 but maybe it will work) but gentoo doesn't see floppy now, so i think i'll install gentoo first with eth0 and after that i'll try to do something with that eth2

ifconfig shows eth0 & lo

so u say gentoo wants eth0, not any other, to be connected? how can i change that? can i do so using liveCD mode?

and that modprobing - i got that by the first time i wrote that command 8) am i genius? :P

ifconfig shows eth0 & lo
Thats normal.
so u say gentoo wants eth0, not any other, to be connected?
usually, eth0 and lo should be connected. Unless you have no network, and don't need eth0.
how can i change that?
Change what? Change eth0 to be disconnected?

Code: Select all

ifconfig eth0 down
can i do so using liveCD mode?
Both.
i got that by the first time i wrote that command Cool am i genius?
I wouldn't push it :P

dimril,

Since your Network Card works with the liveCD, it will work with a properly configured gentoo kernel too.
You will not need the producers drivers.

eth0 ... ethN are your real external network interfaces.
lo is a special one that various parts of Linux (all *NIX) use to talk to other parts when they are installed on the same PC.
This is becuse Linux is 'network trasparent' it can be scattered all over the the internet. As long as you have a network connection, the parts can work together. lo allows a network of only one PC.

There are a lot of problems with realtek cards and a lot of threads related to them. I had a problem with using the module vs. built into the kernel where one method worked and the other did not.

thanks everyone for giving good advices (i'm sure u did) but after setting gentoo i solved that problem by myself - with no producer's drivers

it was all about that gentoo didn't allow me to use other card then eth0 (i needed eth2). when i was setting the network in /etc/config.d/net i just wrote gentoo to use eth2, not 0 and it just worked

but after all - i can tell that setting up gentoo is rather hard work for the first time...
