Sometimes the installation guide will say something like, you are now in your new linux enviroment. But to me it is the same command prompt, just a different directory. Is that how it is supposed to be? Also, when I installed, well I think I installed lol, gentoo yesterday all I got was a command prompt asking me to login (after I rebooted). Did I install it correctly? Thanks

That's perfectly normal.

Since there's a lot of choices on desktop environments, gentoo doesn't provide any by default. Besides, some boxes (servers usually) never need a graphical environment.

Yes, once your system reboots 100% OK and you can login safely (test with both root and the normal user accounts), you can emerge gnome.

Emerge has to be run by root though to be able to install anything. The best practice to run emerge like this would be to log in as normal user, then "su" to switch into root user, then do whatever root-only commands necessary.

KDE: Skipping packages (e.g. kdepim) split off to DE.
