KDE (3.3.2) has suddenly started crashing on me. Instant black screen, Xorg reboot and back to KDM. It has happened several times now, and is quite reproducible:
- In Konqueror's "Show DOM Tree", when scaling up and down.
- Pressing "Debug" on a Konqueror Javascript error.
- in Kdevelop's "Find in files" results page.
I don't think I've installed any new, critical programs lately, but that's hard to say for sure. The problem isn't an overheated CPU. Updating to the latest Nvidia driver didn't help, and the old one has worked fine for a long time.
Where do I look for the cause of this? Any ideas? Help!

Have you tried logging in as a different user and seeing if the problem happens in all accounts?
If yes, try moving the folder ~/.kde to ~/.oldkde and letting the system create a new one. See if that clears up the problem. If it does we can start to find the specific config file that is causing the problem.
If no and you haven't emerged any new packages, we need more info, it could be anything. Is there any important info in /var/log/messages or /var/log/xorg.log ? |

I'm now using the "nv" driver instead of "nvidia", and the problem is gone. I can't provoke the crash anymore.
It seems that long lines of text sometimes crashes the nvidia driver. Specifically viewing a 100KB one-line html/javascript file in Konqueror's debugger. The nv driver also has problems with this, the text gets overwritten and obscured when I scroll the window -- no crashes though. So maybe the error is on the Qt level.
The nv driver doesn't have OpenGL, sadly.

Can you provide more details?
xorg or XFree86?
which exact nvidia-kernel version?
whcih version of nvidia-kernel did you have previously that worked perfectly?
output of /var/log/xorg.log or /var/log/XFree86.log?
kernel version?
did you run opengl-update nvidia after installing the new nvidia driver? |

I had nvidia-kernel-1.0.6111-r3 which had the error. I then upgraded to nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r1, which does exactly the same thing.

I can't say. I've not seen this problem (which seems to be very long lines of text) before, but that's probably not because of earlier, better drivers but because I've simply not triggered the error. The circumstances are special, the error is apparently triggered by opening a 100-200KB one-line file in some sort of viewer -- the debugger or the finder, as described.

Nope, nothing special. It's an instant death when it happens.

Yes. And I think the ebuild also does that itself.
Using the nv driver the problem is gone, but I'd like OpenGL back. Can't I use Mesa or something? With a large performance penalty of course.
My question now is: where do I report this? Xorg? Qt? Nvidia? KDE?
