[SOLVED] Messed-up xorg on laptop using nvidia's driver

[SOLVED] Messed-up xorg on laptop using nvidia's driver

I'm having some weird graphics issues with the nvidia driver on my Latitude c840 laptop. the issues are rather hard to explain, so I'll just use this picture to illustrate the problems I'm having. As you can see, the right-hand side of the screen has an odd 'rainbow' effect, and the bottom of my screen is a duplicate of the top. I can even see the cursor moving around down there when I move it near the top of the screen.

Meanwhile, my full desktop is crunched slightly to the top and left.

These problems are nonexistant when I use the 'nv' driver instead of the 'nvidia' driver. However, I'd prefer to have the hardware acceleration (I intend to play games on this)... So settling for the 'nv' driver is not an option.

My xorg.conf is here and my Xorg.0.log is here. (They're on a separate site to avoid too much scrolling on this post)

Here's one more thing that's kind of a hint - when I run 'glxgears,' it quits immediately with a segmentation fault. I'm pretty sure that has something to do with it.

There must be some setting somewhere that I've messed up... could anyone help?

what version of Xorg are you using?

Also, your log shows lots of (hsync out of range) warnings. I see you use RENDER and Composite, have you tried disabling them?

Re-do your config, never seen vertical refresh from 0 to 60, i don't know if this is wrong, but it's strange for me.

In your Screen section, modes for 24 bits are bad, or this is what your log says:

(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1400x1050"

while in your config you have 1600x1200.

I hope all this can help you.

Well... I thought the vsync/etc numbers were right. They were the numbers that came from the UseEdid option... turns out that EDID isn't very reliable.

I tried out some new numbers I found while searching around on the internet (For the reference of others, those numbers are 30-100 for horizsync and 60 for vertrefresh) and the problem went away. How about that.

I have the same problem as makzu used to have. I get this funny rainbow on the right side of my screen. I disabled RENDER and Composite like tigrezno suggested and that didn't work. I'm also running a Dell Latitude C840. Is there a way to disable EDID and just have to forcefully use the monitor ranges is put in my xorg file?
