EDIT: Split from HOWTO: Installing Internet Explorer 6 with wine. --pjp

Very nice, much thanks. Any chance of a similar guide for getting MDAC2.7/2.8 and JET 4.0 installed?

Fair enough :) They are the database control components that are needed by some software applications to function. I _think_ MDAC actually installed pretty cleanly, but heck if I can get JET to install quite right.

ROCK ON! This worked (the followup post with 20040309). I've been trying to get this to work at least twice a day for four days now. You know what they say, 8th time's the charm.

Just to say it again; with the latest WINE version, it worked with the second, easy method. Thanks for this guide!

Honestly, I won't even try to run IE in my Windows box...
Any change you'll be making a guide how to get PS7 to work on wine? That would be awesome :)

Are you kidding with me? It works great, just pop in the CD and "wine setup"(you might need to copy all of the CD to temp, this seems like a path issue). If you are referring to the "Success dialog", it is easily solved. Use the latest unstable version to install IE, and everything else you might want. Then downgrade WINE to version 200312(the latest, I can't remember the number), and then Photoshop works. And IE. I've got Word and Powerpoint working too. It is all sweet.

The only thing I don't understand, is how they can release a new version when it won't run Photoshop, but did so in the past. For me, not being able to use Photoshop, is a good reason to not use Linux. So WINE gives me best of all worlds.

Also, the reason to install IE is, for many of us, that we want to test our webpages with IE, to make sure that most people can view our pages correctly. Not all companies think it is okay to lose their clients using IE.

 That's it, it is time to hang my head in shame, tale between my legs. Too much wine . . . now the penguine is drunk. 8O I give up on IE. Didn't like it anyway, I just need to log into my bank's website, and couldn't do if from Mozilla. But I found that Opera will work with my bank.

In a way, I'm glad that there is no longer a need for any Microsoft product on my Linux box.

;) ;) ;) ;)

i just hope you wrote an big fat letter to your bank, telling them that you will switch your bank and use another bank wich has an 100% pure java interface or an pure html interface???

using ie is okay, but if you don't tell your bank that you have trouble with your system and that you can not install ie, they will NEVER ever learn.

cheers

I wish they would learn...but they haven't and I don't think they would in near future. no matter how fat my letter is, who would listen to 1% of the users when 99% are happy...

okay... let me tell you a small story:

I used to be an beta tester for a specific IBM product. And as an beta tester, you know other beta testers in your area. Some of them where friends.

After I talked with one of my friends about the new IBM product, we found out that we have in some areas the same problems with the product. My friend mentioned other problems, wich I did not have.

I asked him: Did you report that to IBM?
He answered: Report? Me? NO! I am sure other have found out that error and reportet it already!

I then told him: Lissen! If you don't report, then the product will not get better! And if every one thinks like you, then at the end the bug/error could be in the end-product and this would not serve any one.

And this is exactly the same with the letter to the bank. If every one thinks like you and does not write or tell the bank, that you as a CUSTOMER are not able to do business with the bank, then they will NEVER EVER change. Because they think, that every thing is okay!

Write that letter or email! It will only take you serval minutes and will help the bank to understand that they have customers wich are happy with the bank, but are not able to use a service the bank offers.

Banks are not stupid! They are not out there just for the fun of beeing a bank. They exist, because they WANT to DO business.

cheers

I think that ought to solve some problems...but not the ones where applications try to connect to corp network by itself.

You do realize that Microsoft is still behind IE 100%.... it's not going anywhere anytime soon.

Fscking Netscape 4.x all over again.
