Laptop, xorg, external monitor

I have gentoo running on my Dell laptop (x200). The display is 1024x768
I have an external monitor attached that is also 1024x768.

Under xfree86, I hit the key combination to toggle where the view is displayed.
Toggle once, internal off, external on, toggle again, both on, toggle a third time, I dont recall.

I just emerged xorg-x11-6.8.0-r3

Now, the toggle does not work. I toggle once, and the external monitor briefly flashes with the screen image and then goes blank, and my laptops lcd does the opposite, goes blank momentarily,but then switches back on.

Is there something new in xorg that I have to set up?
