So, I emerged the latest portage (V2.0.51).

My first trial to execute
Code:
#emerge -puvD world

generated a high number of warnings. Unfortunately, I didn't save them and subsequent execution of the same comman does not reproduce the warnings. (Auto healing?)

Now, I get the information:
Code:

schaffter root # emerge -puvD world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[blocks B     ] sys-apps/modutils (from pkg sys-apps/module-init-tools-3.0-r2)
[blocks B     ] sys-apps/module-init-tools (from pkg sys-apps/modutils-2.4.25)
[ebuild     U ] sys-apps/baselayout-1.9.4-r5 [1.9.4-r3] -bootstrap -build -debug
-livecd (-selinux) -static (-uclibc) 197 kB
[ebuild     U ] media-libs/fontconfig-2.2.3 [2.2.2] 732 kB
[ebuild     U ] sys-apps/net-tools-1.60-r9 [1.60-r8] -build -debug +nls -static
(-uclibc) 203 kB

Total size of downloads: 1,133 kB

Before I go off and unmerge modutils plus module-init-tools, can someone confirm that this corresponds to other peoples experiences and that this didn't brake anything?

I'm a little bit worried, since this computer should preferrably remain stable and functional. People are depending upon it.

Regards
Biker

Hi

I solved it by unmerging modutils. Then I emerged module-init-tools: the update of this package needs another version of modutils and fixes the problem.

Which kernel do you have? For 2.4, you need modutils; and for 2.6 you need module-init-tools. You shouldn't have both at once, but if you don't have the right version, you won't be able to load any modules.

I use the 2.6.8-r10 gentoo-dev-sources kernel.
Your current modutils version is 2.4.25.
You have to unmerge it.

The new module-init-tools-3.0-r2 uses the modutils-2.4.27 version [have a look at the ebuild]. But in your portage tree you will not have any more any modutils package.
When i do etcat:
Code:

hostname serge # etcat -v modutils
[ Results for search key           : modutils ]
[ Candidate applications found : 5 ]

 Only printing found installed programs.

*  sys-apps/modutils :
        [   ] 2.4.23 (0) OVERLAY
        [   ] 2.4.24 (0) OVERLAY
        [   ] 2.4.25 (0) OVERLAY
        [M~ ] 2.4.26 (0) OVERLAY
        [M~ ] 2.4.27 (0) OVERLAY

So you can do what i did without any fear...
