Trying to get gcc-3.3.4-r2 installed because some packages (openoffice-ximian and scilab) won't compile correctly under gcc-3.4.2
I get the following error:

Code:

Here are the flags I'm using
Code:
 emerge -pv =sys-devel/gcc-3.3.4-r2

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!

Here's what emerge info throws back
Code:

Any ideas?
BTW, What does the S mean in the status flags when you do an emerge -pv package?

Thanks

I have the same problem. Filed a bug report about it too.
Really irritating, now I cannot build the new openoffice-ximian

Hi, exact same problem here.

I tried emerging stuff with 3.3 yesterday, and it didnt work, so I tried reemerging it, which failed with the same error. Maybe glibc 1006 is b0rked?!

The S just means that there is allready a newer version of gcc installed, but in a different slot, this makes it possible to have for example gtk1 and gtk2 installed at the same time (or glib, gcc etc..)

Just downgraded glibc to stable and reemerged whole system, gcc-3.3 compiles clean now. So it seems devel glibc has errors

Ouch. I'd hate to reemerge the whole system. Is downgrading glibc enough?
gcc-3.3.4-r1 emerged, but won't build openoffice-ximian. When you switch to it, just complains about gcc not being about to create executables. Guess this'll teach me to have my flags set for unstable ~x86!

Im not sure if downgrading glibc is sufficient, I heard several times on the forums that downgrading glibc is generally a bad idea and consireded dangerous, so by reemerging everything I make sure that nothings gets broken. Atleast I hope so^^

i cant even downgrade glibc!!!
Code:

checking for i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc... i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc
checking for suffix of object files... configure: error: cannot compute suffix of object files: cannot compile
See `config.log' for more details.

!!! failed to configure glibc
