xorg-x11 compiles fine and goes until it hits this file:

>>> /usr/share/fonts/misc/clB9x15.pcf.gz

And then portage dies with:

This is nasty. :(

I copied /usr/share/fonts/misc/encodings.dir from another machine, and that didn't help. Same error, even though I know the file was there.

This is nasty.

Yeah, I ran into this problem when re-emerging xorg with USE="bitmap-fonts". For me, there was a broken sym link /usr/share/fonts/misc/encodings.dir. I simply removed the link, such that encodings.dir no longer existed. The emerge succeeded, which installed a working encodings.dir.

Your situation seems a bit different. But have you tried just removing whatever encodings.dir you have?

Removing the encodings.dir fixed the problem.

However, I swear it wasn't there when it was failing at first.
