I looked over the changelog but can't tell if 0.1.13 includes the "remember" patch.

Anyone know?

Thanks,

I stopped using Fluxbox once I found Openbox. Fluxbox always seemed like a hack to me, but Openbox is very clean. Maybe it's just subjective, but I invite everyone to try it out.

I tried it, but didn't see anything appreciably different. Certainly not 'clean' vs. 'hack'. Out of curiosity, what does Obox have that makes it 'clean' compared to Fbox?

So does it include this patch? I've gotten used to having it available.

I installed 0.1.13, restarted X and was presented with four blank desktops. So it didn't "remember" my applications and didn't launch anything from my Startup menu.

Patching it with the 0.1.12 version fails. Too many differences.

I am looking forward to your guide in Tips & Tricks. I emerged fluxbox and phoenix-bin and when started phoenix I noticed that something had happened to the fonts. Not exactly what I expected though, it looks horrible. I had phoenix 0.4 manually installed before and now I am not sure whether it was the fluxbox or phoenix emerge that messed up the fonts. My laptop is also at 800x600 resolution (1.4_rc1 and XFree 4.2.1) and I hope that I will be able to get it to look as good as yours. Looking at fonts.conf it has a section for enabling sub pixel rendering, but it sure doesn't look like it is doing it. I used to have no antialias at all, but I guess that is what it is trying to do now and failing...

I'm eagerly waiting your guide on antialiasing all those apps in Fluxbox as well. I think that my troubles are just a matter of tweaking fonts.conf likely because large fonts look good while smaller ones look bad. But if you write a guide it could save a lot of people time so I'll wait for your expert advice :P

While waiting for the guide I made a little font test page that you can find here http://www.subside.com/fonts.html and needless to say, it looks awful over here...

Wow, nice test page!
My fonts fared quite poorly as well, I'm sorry to say...
I think they've been severely broken ever since I upgraded to X 4.2.1 and I haven't had time to fix them.

Very nice...I'm using Mozilla instead of Phoenix (for the email) but I got fonts looking great in webpages using your instructions. I haven't messed with trying to fix Mozilla's menus yet as that's gonna be a whole GTK mess.

However, I'm having some problems with antialiased fonts in Fluxbox. I followed your instructions, and my fonts in Fluxbox menus/title bars are indeed antialiased, and look great. But, it seems that they are always rendered at some very large point size (like 16-18 point I'd say) no matter what value I put in the style files. If I reduce the size in the file, the fonts "overlap" each other and go out of alignment but the size of the text does not change. It appears that the size of the menu changes when I change the font size but the fonts still get rendered at the large size.
Any ideas?

Switch to a Style like "Deep" (which has small fonts) and then switch back to your Style. Now the fonts should look ok.
Thats a Fluxbox bug and I hope Fluxgen fixes it fast... :/

hmmm...switching styles and back fixes the alignment problem, but it "fixes" it by blowing the menu back up to the huge size. Still, even in Deep style, my fonts in the menu and title bar are comparable in size to the place where it says "Gentoo Forums" in black letters at the top of this page (not the graphic). I'd say it's about the same point size. And this happens in every style, no matter what I put for the size in the style file. It seems like the style is having no effect on the size, but I know it's reloading it because I changed some other options just to check that it was. My fonts are uniformly huge and their size is unajustable. 8O

Is Freetype/fontconfig overriding Flux somehow? This is a really weird problem...

I made a screenshot
It may not look that dramatic in that screenshot, but keep in mind that I have my fonts for Flux set at *9* point, and the fonts for Mozilla are 12 there by comparison. Also note that I'm running at 1024x768 and the menu is taking more than half the vertical width of the screen...before I upgraded Fluxbox it was small and the fonts were the same size as the Mozilla ones or smaller, but not antialiased.
Also note how huge the title bar is at the top. That's the really annoying part about this. (it's not actually cut off at the top like that, I messed up taking the shot).
No matter what size I set the fonts to in Fluxbox, the menus always look like this, in every single style.

Did you try the font settings for your Style file I put in the tutorial?
If no, post the font part of a Style file where the fonts are such big :)

BTW, in a few years you would love to have such large fonts :P

Yes I tried the font setting you wrote in your tutorial and it doesn't change anything....

The font are not that big but if you look at the screeshot Mnemia post look at the minimize and maximize button on the windows .... they are SO BIG !!!

I copied the font section of the style file exactly from your tutorial, and that's what I was using when I took the screenshot. It had no effect either way, because the font size rendered is always the same large size no matter what I put in the style file. It shrinks down to the "expected" size immediately if I turn off antialiasing in the menu.

Where on earth is it getting this setting from? I know it's probably something stupid....

(lol, I'm sure I will want fonts that big someday. But right now I'm 21 so I prefer less clutter  )

Yeah, that's the most frustrating part. It seems that those go nuts too when I turn on antialiasing. I assumed they were scaling to match the font size.
