less of a 'problem' and more of a nusance. when i installed gentoo i did a stage 3 install. i forgot to unmerge and remove sysklogd from the default run level before i merged and added metalog.

now i get this whenever i run rc-update, this instance i just emerged vsftpd and xinetd.

Quote:

tatooine root # rc-update add xinetd default
* xinetd added to runlevel default
* Caching service dependencies...
* Service 'metalog' already provide 'logger'!;
* Not adding service 'sysklogd'...

* rc-update complete.

how do i clean up the bolded stuff? its annoying to see that everytime i rc-update.

thanks in advance for the help.

I suppose you did, but just want to be sure :
Code:
rc-update del sysklogd

So I think sysklogd isn't in any runlevels, but xinetd requires it as a dependency. And the 'error' message you get is just rc-update telling you it will use metalog instead. You can check in the /etc/init.d/xinetd file, in the depend section, if there is sysklogd listed.

naw it did this before xinetd was installed. it has done it ever since i installed.

there has to be a way to make it go away.

Had the same thing
Quote:

* Service 'dnsmasq' already provide 'dns'!;
* Not adding service 'named'...

Was experimenting with named and dnsmasq, didn't work like it should ( im just a GentooNewbie ;) ) so I deleted the files named and dnsmasq in

/etc/init.d/

now the error is gone :)
