I wanted to float this one out there in hopes someone has found a solution to this problem. I searched the forums as well as bugs.gentoo.org and couldn't find a reference, though there is one on bugzilla.gnome.org which is *exactly* the same as what I'm experiencing:

http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=150774

There is an example screenshot attached to the bug (from a Gentoo user) in that report which illustrates the problem quite well. I can create an example screenshot myself if needed. I've added a CC to the bug report last night to see how active it is but nothing has changed since.

So, are we alone on this one or is this problem more widespread?

I've got the EXACT same problem. I was just about to create a thread on it, but you beat me to it. I think it's due to the upgrade to GTK-2.4.7... I haven't looked at the bug report as of this post.. Here's my screenshot of the distortion BTW. I also tried recompiling EVERYTHING (I was bored, and have a fast system). I did a emerge -e nautilus.. no luck.

I've got that problem too, on my sparc machine. It's pretty annoying.

Looks like this a legit bug then. Should we open a report on bugs.gentoo.org, or leave it upstream? The Gnome guys have been quiet since the bug was opened on the 22nd.

Here's my example screenshot

It appears to be a Gentoo related problem since the two bug posters are Gentooers and the people posting here are Gentooers. Looking at the ebuild.. I see this...

# FIXME : what to do with exif/jpeg config stuff ?

Meaning it most likely is due to Gentoo. Now who wants to file that bug report? I'll file it if I don't see one added in the next 15 minutes. Make sure we attach the example images. I'm going to go try and fix the ebuild right now.

Hmm, could very well be the case, but the initial bug reporter was using SuSE Linux 9.1, not Gentoo ... same Gnome version though.

Hmm I didn't see that guy was using SuSe :P. I'm going to wait for a patch to be released then post a bug report requesting the ebuild be updated to use that patch...

Update: I get this problem with .png images also!

He's using GARNOME which AFAIK downloads packages from CVS. So the problem is most likely in GNOME. However, I'm not entirely against reporting this as a Gentoo bug also; Maybe our guys are more willing to fix the bug. The GNOME bug was filed to plenty of people, but none of them had taken any action towards assigning or even confirming the bug...

I had this problem too.

Downgrading x11-libs/gtk+ from 2.4.7 to 2.4.4 solved it for me for now. 8O

According to an addition to the Gnome bug, the problem is resolved in GTK+ 2.4.9 (which was released yesterday):

Quote:
From GTK+ 2.4.9 change log:

"Fix a problem with GDK_INTERP_NEAREST scaling which caused Nautilus thumbnails to be misdrawn [Christoph Fergeau]"

Not in portage yet though :(

I'll try to build 2.4.9 with 2.4.7 ebuild. :)

Works for me :D

If you don't want to wait for the official release, go grap the source here: ftp://ftp.gtk.org/pub/gtk/v2.4/ and place it in /usr/portage/distfiles. You'll need to copy the 2.4.7 ebuild to Portage overlay and rename it to 2.4.9. Copy the patches from /usr/portage/x11-libs/gtk+/files too. If you don't want to tweak the ebuild (like me) gunzip and bzip2 the gtk+ source file. Ebuild digest and emerge.

I'm not filing a bug in Gentoo because I think 2.4.7 is in unstable. Haven't checked that though.

https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61957

Doing a manual ebuild update worked for me too so it shouldn't be much of an issue to get a version bump.

GTK+ 2.4.9 is in portage now and fixes this problem. Might want to change title to include [SOLVED] :)
