Installing Xorg

Post by elpierco » Sat Aug 14, 2004 2:04 am

When I try to run the Xorg config app I got an error so I ran the semi manual X config to generate a config file. Now when I try to run startx I get the following. I have rebuilt my system 3 times this week and I get the same error. The graphics card is an onboard ATI XL 8MB card. Do I need to compile anything special into my kernel??? PLease help

If you built xorg with -fstack-protector in your CFLAGS, try building it without it or with -fno-stack-protector instead.

So I am trying your suggestion since I have added a bunch of options to my kernel and that didnt help. Also tried booting the knoppix disc again and trying to figure out what module it uses. Ahh this is so frustrating! I emerge xfree tried that same problem. Now emerge xorg-x11 with -fstack-protector removed...let you know what happens.

So I let that emerge over night without the fstack-protector and woke up this morning to find it had completed successfully. I then ran the X -configure and got some new error! Hmm that is iteresting I thought. Manually setup xorg.conf with xorgconfig and started X. AHHHHHHH it started. I am so happy. I went back and loaded my minimalistic kernel and it runs just fine. Throughout the past two weeks I have been messing with distcc and trying to get X going. Building from stage 1 I changed -O3 to -O2 and it compiled perfectly. Now removing the fstack-protector option and X runs...I now understand the power of /etc/make.conf err the dark side? Thanks again man

how does one merge from using XFree to xorg?

emerge -C xfree ; emerge xorg-x11

??

will this break every app that i currently have emerged utilizing XFree?

There's another thread that discusses this-- http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=158911

I don't think it actually causes many problems anymore.
