Hey, how are you? i have just installed gnome 2.6 in gentoo. Everything went fine, but when i go to network i dont see the computers in my network. I didnt have this problem when i installed gnome 2.6 in debian, and i dont know what the problem might be. Which is the file where i have to say my network name? what other files should i edit to see the computers on my network? do i have to install something? i can ping the other computers. thanks |

in the file /etc/hosts add your machines ip with a fully quailifed domain name after the localhost line. Some people have reported that adding the machine name on the local host line was necessary and others have reported that replacing localhost with the FQDN was necessary. Try each of these options in order until yu find the one that works for you.
Code: | 127.0.0.1 localhost loopback
192.168.1.254 mybox.my.domain mybox
|
Code: | 127.0.0.1 localhost mybox
192.168.1.254 mybox.my.domain mybox
|
Code: | 127.0.0.1 mybox.my.domain mybox
192.168.1.254 mybox.my.domain mybox

hey, thanks for replying so soon. I didnt understand a couple of things, i am learning english and gentoo...sorry. In /etc/hosts i have to add only my machine's ip or the ip of all my machines? I cant add the ips all of my machines because they get the ip by dhcp and it is not always the same one for each machine. If i have to add only my machine's ip like in the example you wrote... how?
my ip is 192.168.1.39
the machine's name is ykcorse-gentoo
the name of my network is Redcasa.
I have tried this /etc/hosts
1)
127.0.0.1 localhost
192.168.1.39 ykcorse-gentoo.Redcasa ykcorse-gentoo
2)
127.0.0.1 localhost ykcorse-gentoo
192.168.1.39 ykcorse-gentoo.Redcasa ykcorse-gentoo
3)
127.0.0.1 ykcorse-gentoo.Redcasa ykcorse-gentoo
192.168.1.39 ykcorse-gentoo.Redcasa ykcorse-gentoo
is anyone of them correct? none of them worked |

this doesnt work neither. When i start gnome it complains because it says it doesnt find my hostname in /etc/hosts, so i have to add it too. Where do i have to write the name of my network? because this is the most important thing,no? |

I'm glad you figured it out. I couldn't think of anything else to try. I wonder, is the dhcp server on your network wondows based? _________________ Gentoo: it's like wiping your ass with silk. |

This is in reply to curtis119.
I think you need to change your monicker. You have correctly listed your location in ever-increasing sizes, but there is nothing beyond the cosmos. The cosmos describes everything. There is nothing beyond the cosmos because the cosmos is all-encompassing.
