[CUT][EDIT]

Summary
Anyone new to this thread, yes, ati-drivers and celestia don't like each other.
Certain combinations of glibc, xorg, celestia and ati-drivers may occasionally work for you, and may occassionally fail. Currently, the ~x86 drivers are working for me.

The most recent xorg-x11-6.8.2 and ati-drivers-8.10.19 work just swimmingly with out any changes to the default. Hopefully this is the same case for everyone else. I don't know about any versions earlier than xorg-x11-6.8.2, but my suspicion is that any 6.8.* should work. Good luck, and hopefully this is the last of this!

Options
The only option for older drivers/servers is a decent hack from Wedge_, but it's still a hack.

IgnoreGLExtensions [ "GL_ARB_vertex_program" ]

I think effectively disabling that extension has some performance impact, but it still seems to run pretty well.

media-video/ati-drivers-3.11.1
x11-base/xorg-x11-6.7.0-r2

Celestia still crashes.

The ebuild is now in portage. But no luck, it fails to run as previous versions did.

I thought i was running the latest ati-drivers, but i wasn't. Slashdot alerted me to the fact that i wasn't running ~x86 for the ati drivers
Code:
media-video/ati-drivers-3.11.1
app-sci/celestia-1.3.2
x11-base/xorg-x11-6.7.0-r1

works. good luck to everyone else who has had this problem

btw. this is with a ATI 9700 and a P4 with a 2.6.8-gentoo-dev-sources-r3

Incredible. The only difference between my setup and yours is the kernel version. I'll try to upgrade to 2.6.8 but don't think that's the problem. Pleas tell me which use flags you used to build celestia. Anybody else got it working?

here's the output of emerge -pv celestia and emerge info. maybe it's my ~x86 glibc (i can't downgrade so i can't help you there -- i wouldn't recommend updating to ~x86 for glibc if you can help it, i only do it because i used to run ~x86 for everything until i started having too many problems but things really break if you downgrade glibc)

If you are wondering about my cflags, I used acovea

Code:
# emerge -pv celestia

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

[ebuild   R   ] app-sci/celestia-1.3.2  -debug -debug -debug +gnome +gtk +kde  0 kB

maxdamage: can you try his kernel version and if it still crashes (and you are willing to go ~x86 glibc) try glibc-2.3.4.20040619-r1 ?

your input would be greatly appreciated

Of course. I have exams next week at Uni but as soon as I can I'll try those updates and post here the results.

Some info that could be of help: i use 2.6 kernel headers (linux26-headers-2.6.6-r1, stage2 install with them), although when I had 2.4 ones installed celestia did also crash.
And I have my glibc installed with +PIC and +NPTL USE flags enabled. The rest of my system is almost completely stable. No prelinking done.

just fyi, i use ntpl, prelinking and 2.6 kernel headers (2.6.8.1). prelinking won't affect you anyway, since you can't prelink ati-drivers, and it wouldn't affect it anyway.

good luck!

I've just installed sys-kernel/gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.8-r3. Celestia crashed again.
Tried
Code:
opengl-update xorg-x11
emerge celestia
opengl-update ati

but crashed one more time.

Next step is trying the ~x86 glibc.

No luck. I installed the new glibc
Code:
sys-libs/glibc-2.3.4.20040619-r1

Recompiled celestia. But still crashes.

I'll try both 2.6.8 kernel and the new glibc when I reboot, but don't think this'll solve so easily.

*** One reboot after ***

Code:
Mutsumi root # emerge -pv gentoo-dev-sources ati-drivers glibc celestia

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild   R   ] sys-kernel/gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.8-r3  -build -doc -ultra1  0 kB
[ebuild   R   ] media-video/ati-drivers-3.11.1   0 kB
[ebuild   R   ] sys-libs/glibc-2.3.4.20040619-r1  -build -debug -debug -erandom -hardened +makecheck -multilib +nls +nptl +pic  9 kB
[ebuild   R   ] app-sci/celestia-1.3.2  -debug -debug -debug +gnome +gtk -kde  0 kB

Using the 2.6.8 kernel now. Still crashes. Some package I haven't installed as ~x86 is making celestia fail.

I tried running celestia both as root an as normal user, so the problem seems no personal-config related.

You move.

Not for me. The new 3.12.0 drivers are like the 3.11.1 but with the texture compression bug. Celestia segfaults, as always.

BTW torcs fails to emerge. Appears to be an ATI problem. Can anybody confirm it?

Do you execute celestia with the KDE interface? I use Gnome. Don't know what more to do...

I run gnome, too. I usually use the kde flag, but it errors out about arts, and since I don't like arts I just USE"-kde" for it. (but that doesn't sound like a problem you have anyway. It works for me under fluxbox, too.

:?: I get pretty bad flickering whenever I have stars turned on. Is this a celestia thing, or a celestia vs. ati thing?

Do you mean when zooming in or following an it stutters? Because that's just because it's a very intensive operation. Have you tried changing the render menu options? On my 9700 celestia chugs along barely acceptably (for me) if you have anything slower it's probably even more painful
