I noticed some serious security issues were recently announced, so I decided to do an emerge sync followed by an emerge -pv world intending to follwo that wint an emerge world to bring everything up to date. I then expected to build a new kernel and install it, and everything would be [somewhat more] secure. :)

I finished the color=green]emerge sync[/color] at slightly before Mon Jul 5 06:50:35 UTC 2004, just to give a timestamp. Unfortunately, when I did the emerge -pv world, I got the following nastygram on my screen:
Code:
eli root # emerge -pv world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating world dependencies

*** Package in world file is not installed: sys-apps/textutils

*** Package in world file is not installed: sys-apps/sh-utils

I also tried an emerge -pv sys-apps/fileutils on one of the boxes, with the following result:
Code:
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild  N    ] sys-apps/fileutils-4.1.11-r2   [empty/missing/bad digest]

Total size of downloads: 0 kB

Now, I am very much afraid to emerge anything, as it looks like another case of the corrupted portage tree syndrome.

Furthermore, I did this simultaneously on a bunch of systems, mainly because its late and I'm getting sleepy, and I wanted to hurry up and get the emerge world started on all the boxes, so I could go to sleep while everything chugged along, so I have gone and broken the portage tree on many boxes.

Hopefully, things will heal themselves, given enough time. I have seen corruption of the portage tree before, and it seems to heal with time. When time heals this wound (with the hard work of the developers!), another emerge sync should make it all better.

Has anybody else seen anything like this recently?

Whats the prognosis?

Code:
oberyno> esearch -c sh-utils                                                  ~
[ N] sh-utils (2.0.15-r1):  textutils, sh-utils and fileutils moved to coreutils

You can remove those from your worldfile. Coreutils is taking care of their duties.

Thanks, but what is this esearch command you are using? I have neither the man page for it nor the command itself. :(

esearch is a portage utility for speeding up searches of package names and descriptions.

Just emerge it if you want it.
