I'm trying to get my 5 button microsoft intellimouse optical mouse to work in linux.. i want to have the scroll working and the side buttons working to go back and forward.

I found a tutorial on this:
http://www.linuxforum.com/linux_tutorials/70/1.php

But when i get to the step where it says:

tar xzvvf imwheel-1.0.0pre5.tar.gz
./configure && make && su -c 'make install'

I get an error:

tex gpm.texinfo
make[3]: tex: Command not found
make[3]: *** [gpm.dvi] Error 127
rm gpm.texinfo
make[3]: Leaving directory `/home/mike/imwheel-1.0.0pre6/gpm-1.19.3/doc'
make[2]: *** [do-all] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/mike/imwheel-1.0.0pre6/gpm-1.19.3'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/mike/imwheel-1.0.0pre6'
make: *** [all] Error 2

It ./configures properly, but the make command gives me that error..

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

mkelly09,
I would just
Code:

emerge imwheel

and use the version that is in portage. After getting that installed try putting the folllowing commands into ~/.xinitrc:
Code:
exec xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 6 7 4 5" &
exec imwheel -k -b "67" &

That works great for me. The only problem I have is that Firefox changed the keyboard shortcut from <Backspace>. The side buttons still work fine in Konqueror. I would imagine that it could be made to work in Firefox too. I just have not spent any time on it.

Regards,
Joel

In the changelog for the newest release of firefox (I'm not sure if it is in portage yet) there is a listing for support for the thumb buttons for forward/backwards navigation specifically on the MS intellimouse and linux. What that means i'm not sure but it is there!
