Since portage is dead, can I simply build the library for it? and if so, can someone point me to the correct source?

The solution is depend on what did you do to make it "missing"? You may want to search for libstdc++ to see what show up.

Usual story, 'emerge -u portage' had to be stopped for lack of time.
Shame too, I had only just thought of using 'emerge -f' in future before discovering that it was broken. Maybe 'emerge -U' would help too.

I have libs like
libstdc++.so.2...
libstdc++-libc6...

I have the liveCD, so if there is a way to set up a temporary portage to emerge the real one that would help.

I would much rather just build the required library, but it's not obvious which source(s) and settings will produce it.

could be the LDPATH in '/etc/env.d/05gcc' point to a "wrong" location. Just edit it to point to your current gcc-lib then do
Code:
# env-update
# source /etc/profile

Progress. The libs do exist, I didn't realise they were only "locate"-able by root.
And 05gcc is indeed still pointing to the old location (as are others).

It's Python that fails first though, and I don't know how to point it in the right direction.
Editing 05gcc and gcc/config doesn't do it, and 'env-update' also uses Python.

Quote:

/usr/bin/python: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Other programs produce the same error.

using gcc/config for clues, 'locate' yeilds /etc/env.d/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.2.3
but 'ls /etc/env.d/gcc/' shows only config and i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.3.2

Confusing.

you may want to add '/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.2' to '/etc/ld.so.conf' then run `ldconfig`. After that check '/etc/env.d/05gcc' to make sure that LDPATH point to '/usr/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.3.2' and then run `env-update && source /etc/profile`.
