FUCK FUCK FUCK. I SUCK. I just blew out my .mozilla directory thereby killing all my mail that I've recived over the past 5 years or so, and all my nice filters for automatically sorting it into nice directories for me. I SUCK. I have backups, but they're a month or so old, so all the e-mail I've gotten over the past few weeks is gonzo.

FUCK! FUCK FUCK!

Sorry, but FUCK ME.

Edit: Correction, my last backup of my E-mail was in May. dammit.

Not that its helpful for this incident, but couldn't you submit a cron job to backup daily or even hourly?

Well, yeah, I can do that. I hadn't really considered it necessary - I mean, this is the first time I've ever inadvertantly deleted all my e-mail (ever since I've been using the Internet like 10 years ago). Also, then it becomes a big project - my e-mail isn't the only important stuff I have lying around. If I started backing up everything, it would be pretty involved.

In light of this incident, I may decide to learn from my mistakes though. I may try that trashcan thing mentioned on /. today, but it's a bit embarrasing to now offically be the type of person who types rm -r * in the wrong directory (yeah, I've never accidentally done that anywhere important before, in all my years of computing - the closest was an inadvertant echo y | format c: back in the DOS days, but that was fixed with a simple unformat...)

Mostly I was posting here to vent. I'm sure my neighbors were tired of the screaming and smashing furniture noises.

I did something similar a ways back. A month or so after a fresh install of the * distribution (I forget which one), I did an rm -rf * while in /home/me, thinking I was in the /mnt/floppy directory. DOH!!! There goes my paper that's due in 12 hours. Not to mention countless emails. Luckily, since the distro was new on my system, I didn't have much else in there. It still sucked, though.

I run a backup of my profile everytime I log in. And I run a backup of my evolution folder everytime I close Evolution. That's nice imho.

Suggestion: write an update script that basically includes emerge sync, emerge -uD world, backup vital documents, etc.
Works miracles.

Is it feesible to use IMAP in the future? This way you won't have to back anything up.

Yes but then your server needs to have backups and a lot of disk space. :?
