As the topic suggests, since this is a fairly BIG thing for the guy who has created a Distro that has become extremely well known the world over, that maybe for those interested we can look at starting up a "help Daniel Fund"

A Paypal account could be setup for donations to be made, and the details for this account given to daniel once we have the ball rolling.

I, for one, am proud to offer the first $50AU (hey, not much, but something) if anyone's up for it.

Lets see what we can do for a man that's essentialy made something that's given geeks worldwide a reason to smile. That reason is Gentoo :D

This is certainly a good thing to do, but isn't the donation button on the front page good for this? I'm not mistaken in thinking some of that must go to daniel robbins?

If it doesn't then yeah, we should set up a special fund for him. 20k is rough. I for one would be honored to donate my next paycheck (it's meager but it's something, I make 7.50 an hour doing database stuff after school ;) ). Gentoo is worth it.

I bet we could flash-donate that $20k :P

I don't believe anything from the link on the front page goes to Robbins... It goes to Gentoo, the new nonprofit thing.

I'd be glad to donate to a drobbins fund. He's the reason we're all here now, and if we can chip in to help out his wife and kids, it's the least we can do. We got our favorite OS out of the deal!

Yeah, sign me up! It'll take me a few weeks until I can get a paypal account, so will this be up for a while? I want to help this man out! He made me my dream Linux distro!

Yep, I'll support it. If possible please set it up. I'll contribute. It is a shame that somebody who created an excellent ditro is going broke...

Don't take this personally... I'm a skeptic. How is YOUR paypal account going to help daniel? (I've never used paypal)

Awesome! Don't worry about me not having time to set up a paypal account. I was comissioned to make a logo for someone recently... I'm not getting paid too much, just about 75 bucks, but he was gonna pay via paypal, and as I said, I don't have an account. Well, what's the obvious solution? Have him pay Daniel instead! :)

I appologize for doubting your honest, but from my perspective you're a random net user who wants me to give you money :)

So I think we shouldn't use a private paypal account if this is to work. Someone official would have to create it and such.

hey pjp

Didn't necessarily say we were going to use mine, I was rustling through some of the options in it, seein what there is that might help

I might end up just making a new paypal account for this purpose, it could be easier, that way pjp, u could possibly even list it on the site somewhere for those of us who want to help out

Just my ideas so far

And yeah, I think that's probably an idea chizu.....see if we can get one of the admins of the site to help us get the account setup, as there would be some details needed to set it up no one else has access to but the admins. Good thinkin there :D

Well, alright, how should we go about that then? We need to at least raise awareness to our desire to set this up. (on getting an official donation system, and such)

I've just verified that donations can be made through the store. Daniel is currently "the store", so anything going through the store will go to him (excluding merchandise and other associated costs). No need to set up a new account.

Obviously drobbins has never heard of the open-sourcing of Blender.

In the last 5 minutes, I ordered a Gentoo CD from http://store.gentoo.org You should too. This man has done a lot and deserves our thanks. The profit margin on a $10 burned CD is a pretty measly gift by itself.... but there are thousands of Gentoo users, and that'll add up damn quick.

As a side note, it is also possible to donate w/o receiving something. I mainly mention it, because it seems silly to "buy" something you don't really want (or will use), just to make a donation.

That is good to hear. I would rather have something official like that then a user setting up an account. Just wish they would have a little more merchandise like they did before.

If we buy the "Donate to Gentoo" widget at the store, will this money end up with Daniel?

Not that it'd be bad if the money were to go to the foundation, but I'd prefer to support the distribution via ebuilds, support, etc.; Daniel's family can't eat ebuilds.

The Gentoo store has a button for donating to Gentoo as opposed to purchasing a CD, etc. Given the above post saying that store proceeds go directly to Daniel, I assume this would be better than buying a CD (you can give $20 or $50 or whatever and he doesn't have to send out a CD). Of course, I'm sure buying a CD helps too.

And it looks like shirts may be available soon too.

It would be nice if we could get some official confirmation on this.

I'd be more than happy to donate money to the distribution, but I'd like to know that some of it is at least getting to Daniel.

Both the donations through the paypal account on the front page and through the Store go to Daniel directly:
Quote:

> support me and my family in our ability to cover _basic

> Gentoo project through the new NFP?

At some point, there will only be a NFP to donate to.

In the mean time, if I can't cover basic living expenses and have a basic
standard of living, then I suppose I could use some of the donation money to
support my family so I can continue to run the store, or I could shut down
the store and quickly try to get a job.

While the store is running, the donations will go towards NFP-related
expenses that I am planning on covering via the Store. If not this, then if
absolutely necessary towards the store itself so it can keep running. If the
Store is shut down or the Store doesn't need the money, then it could go
towards the NFP's operating budget, but only after the NFP's legal expenses
have been paid off.
