I've tried compiling the kernel from minion.de, tried the NvAGP 0 option and also even tried a few other more generic (for NVIDIA) XF86Configs as well as backdating my xfree install all the way to 4.3.0 (in stages). Nothing seems to work. I'm aware that the MM sources have the 4kstacks enabled, but that shouldn't explain why this won't work on my system. Just in case it's needed, below are my dmesg and lspci outputs along with my kernel config.

Yep same here. I went from mms-sources 2.6.3-mm4 to 2.6.5-rc3-mm4 with just errors on x starting. It says:

(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
(II) UnloadModule: "vgahw"
(II) Unloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/libvgahw.a
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Just fyi: I did recompile my Nvidia stuff. My system:

Dual P4 Xeon 2.8 Ghz, 2 GB Ram, Nvidia 5200 128MB, 3Ware SATA HW Mirror.

I am anticipating some help from one of my business partners, If I fine the fix, I will post it here....I know he had this problem too...and he fixed it (kernel dev's have all the fun...)

Mark

Are you talking about 64bit kernels?

No, just the P4 option which covers the Xeon, with SMP enabled. It is a kernel issue, due to the fact I can go back to my old kernel and everything works fine. For that matter, I don't even know where to enable 64 bit...so does that mean I am using it...I don't think so...but, it is early and not enough coffee yet....

Ok, just confused me, because the post is in the amd64 forum  :?:

Yep, same problem here. I upgraded from 2.6.4 mm1 (or something like that) to 2.6.5 (something) mm4 and the nvidia module wouldn't load no matter what I did and I tried reemerging nvidia-glx and nvidia-kernel about 4 or 5 times, so then I downgraded to 2.6.5_rc1 as Tamran stated -- wouldn't boot. So then I had to dig up my Live CDs since I didn't back up the old kernel (the ONE time that I didn't everything breaks) and reinstall 2.6.4 mm1 again.

2.6.5 Vanilla (just released last night) seems to fix it. I haven't tried the new mm sources yet though.

don't you have to recompile the nvidia drivers after upgrading your kernel?? Nvidia uses a kernel patch or something to let that module load. This might have disappeared after upgrading

the problem is that 2.6.5 mm sources has 4k stacks enabled instead of 8k stacks (the previous default). from what i understand, other 2.6.5 kernels still use 8k stacks so they will work with the nvidia drivers. unless nvidia releases a new driver with a fix for 4k stacks, you cant use the nvidia drivers with 2.6.5 mm sources, or any other kernel has 4k stacks.

I'm talking even vanilla sources of 2.6.5_rc2 and 2.6.5_rc3 as well. Like I said above, the 2.6.5 vanilla kernel works fine, so they must have done something. I'm just confused as to why the vanilla kernels didn't even work for me.

I just heard that the kernel option "CONFIG_4KSTACKS=y" is what breaks the nvidia binary drivers....
Now, what to do with it I don't know yet...but at least we have the issue identified....

You can backout the alway on patch and under debugging turn it off. I am stay in a few revs behind on my stuff as 2.6.X seems to be too much in flux still.

On another note. I am emerging xfree on my new Dual 246 as we speak. And it's smoking fast. :) joy
