I had problems during step3 upgrading from 1.2 to 1.4. Perl failed, and after some research, I found out that some builds may fail if you have LANG, LANGUAGE, LC_ALL, LC_MESSAGES set to your language.
You can unset them or set them to C. After that, Perl build went fine.
A nice trick Bandit2 told me is to do it in /root/.bashrc so you never forget again  |

Thanks a lot for posting this. Hopefully it will help steveb, among others. I think it will reach a better audience in Portage & Programming than in Installing Gentoo, although I think I'll leave a shadow topic here for a while, in case some people view upgrading as a sort of a new installation. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

yea upgrading to 1.4 killed my system.
oh well a fresh install is better than no gentoo _________________ .. ...kemical. ... .. .. |

anyone done an ebuild for perl5.8.0 yet? it's tagged as stable on cpan.org
