Thanks to Spyderous for providing early ebuilds of the XOrg open source public implementation of X11.
This freedesktop.org-hosted project is based on xfree-4.4.0-rc3, and has started further development.
Nvidia-drivers work, and probably ati too. I haven't experienced any problems yet, but don't expect much of a difference from xfree-4.3.99.x.

The font path has changed from /usr/X11R6/lib/x11/fonts to /usr/share/fonts. Therefore you'll need to edit your font paths in /etc/X11/XF86Config (or if you use x font server /etc/X11/fs/config), and reemerge fontconfig. If you want the microsoft-fonts, emerge corefonts too.

Ebuilds here.

This is great. I am about to compile Xorg. I'm glad there seems to be such an easy transition to a more open server.

So is the transition pretty straight foreward? Just emerge the X-org ebuilds, unmerge X11, re-emerge NVidia drivers, and /etc/init.d/X11 restart after editing font paths?

Also, does this mean that Xfree will die soon? There seems to be no distro support for any new versions, i mean, who will use it if its not the default nor supported by any distros?

I don't know, I've run into some problems now. The latest ebuild doesn't seem to compile. Some packages wants to install xfree again if I unmerge it. I injected xfree, but got a problem when compiling PyOpenGL. Something with the gl/glx include files... Not sure if I should report it as a bug, since I can't compile the latest snapshot.

Im glad you brought this up, as I had completely forgotten about this aspect.

Switching to XOrg is going to be such a hairy endeavour, especially in distros like Gentoo, as all of the ebuilds are made with XFree86 in mind.

Ugh, I fixed one typo (access.c) in the snapshot, only to run into makefile inconsistencies further down the line :\

I ran into the same problem. I guess there is no harm in waiting for the project to become a bit more mature.

Seems the compilation error was both introduced and fixed in CVS thursday, maybe the makefile stuff is fixed too. Kinda strange it won't even build, some heavy restructuring going on?

I think some of you are confusing this with the freedesktop.org xserver project.

Which packages are these? Do they really need xfree? Probalby their dependency can be changed to virtual/x11 --> bugs.gentoo.org

I have been using the xorg-x11 ebuild for the last 2 1/2 weeks. So far I have not had any problems with any othe apps I use. But today I found a couple of small problems, other than the one where portage keeps asking me to update to xfree-4.3.0-r5(in bugzilla there is an atttachment:
which will root through your portage tree and change references to xfree to xorg-x11)

The problem I have discovered is that opengl -update no longer works correctly. If I run opengl-update nvidia-it runs without error-if I run opengl-update xfree it simply reports the command line options and does nothing. No biggy.

The opengl stuff is store in the following different locations:
/usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib
/usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/include

/usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/lib
/usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/include

/usr/X11R6/include/GL

/usr/lib/

I just had to manually link the libraries and header files to the xorg-x11files:
ln -sf /usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/include/* /usr/X11R6/include/GL/
ln -sf /usr/lib/opengl/xorg-x11/lib/* /usr/lib/

(I also unmerged nvidia-glx just to be on the safe side and reemerged aftwerwords-and did while in X...upon re-ermege nivida-glx-all the links pointed correctly to /usr/lib/opengl/nvidia/* )

to switch back to xorg-x11(*xfree*) opengl...

I needed to do this because kdemultimedia and PyOpenGL would not build against nvidia-glx...

That doesn't mean it won't be implemented in the future; xorg's goal right now is to provide a quick release of a replacement for xfree.

The ebuild file says that both the files and patch versions are "0.1.1", but only "0.1" exists on spyderous's site. Looking at the the timestamps, the ebuild is stamped 2 minutes after the 0.1 files, so I'm guessing it might be a typo in the ebuild.

But I guess we'll have to wait for spyderous to confirm. I'm emerging 0.1 files at the moment. I'll post back if I get it working.

After changing the files and patch versions to "0.1", I eventually get this when trying to compute the digests.

Code:
>>> Downloading http://dev.gentoo.org/~spyderous/overlay/distfiles/xorg-x11-6.7.0.tar.bz2

Error: The file was not found on the server!

There doesn't seem to be a release tarball on spyderous's site, so I think this, coupled with the files and patch versions, suggests to me that he's not quite finished preparing everything. I'm going to wait a bit, until the files appear, or he fixes the ebuild.
