so here is the issue, i just got done with a emerge world after moving /etc/make.profile to /usr/portage/profiles/default-x86-1.4 or whatever it is (the 1.4 x86 profile) but i have this problem is that /usr/bin/gcc is still 2.95.3 but now there is /usr/bin/gcc-3.2 (which is infact 3.2). when i try to merge something like OpenOffice that requires a 3.x gcc ebuild (or maybe make?) finds 2.95.3 instead of the newer version. what i want to know is: how do i get rid of the 2.95.3 (if i can) and replace it (i mean flat out replacement) witht he newer 3.2? - thanks

Does 'emerge unmerge gcc-2.95.3-r5' remove it? If so, does 'emerge -pu world' want to reinstall it?

Does adding CC="gcc-3.2" and CXX="g++-3.2" to your /etc/make.conf help anything?

Tough call. Do you still want 2.95.3 as your main compiler? As long as you have those variables defined in your make.conf, most (not all) software should respect it, but it's up to you if you want 2.95.3 back. I'm not sure, but I think if you remerge GCC 3.2 now, with 2.95.3 completely out of your system, 3.2 will be installed as your default compiler. I have not upgraded 2.95.3 to 3.2 in place, though, so you should read the GCC 3.2 upgrade thread, and don't feel afraid to ask questions there before you do anything drastic.

its a little late to stop me from doing anything rash. :-) oh well, i think i might keep the 2.95.3 version on there just in case :-)
that is, if i can install it again :-)

I think you can rename gcc-3.2 and g++-3.2 to gcc and g++ without problems....
