Don't forget that emulators like WineX can be an easy way out for developers who are debating a native Linux port of a game. Don't get me wrong, I personally like WineX 3.3, but would rather see more native releases (hint hint valve!) than game publishers that solely rely on emulation.

Wine Is Not an Emulator

(sorry, bad habbit... but it is techically an alternate windows API implementation)

Yeah - it is an "easy way out". Ultimately, a native Linux port would always be better than a Wined version of a game.

Bah! But WineX is so very useful... What should we do about the "easy way out" problem?

I know I know...

one more thing should I do a

Code: Select all

 emrge winex
or

Code: Select all

emerge winex-transgaming

i personaly like wineX, even NFSU runs :P (okay, with horrible perfpormance, but it works..)

and if linux become more popular they will produce more nativ linux ports, so long winex is (for me) a workaround :P

WineX isn't free, you have to pay $5 a month (three months to start with) to download the .rpm/.tgz packages and post on the forums. For some reason Transgaming won't let us have a winex-cvs ebuild, but thankfully it's not that hard to do manually. You can download it from CVS by following the instructions on the Transgaming site then using tools/wineinstall in the winex folder. It works fine for Steam and other games, but it doesn't contain the copy protection & installshield code so for some games you might need a no-cd crack or to manually extract the cab files to get it working.

WineX CVS

You can always do the WineX CVS it works with steam as well. Only main difference is it doesnt have the copy protection code that the retail version does.

If you build from cvs you might want to use some optimization, the default is none and to turn on debug. This is what I used and it's working fine, should be significantly faster then the default.

Code: Select all

make CFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer -ffast-math -Wall -mpreferred-stack-boundary=2 -fno-keep-static-consts -D__const=const -fno-strict-aliasing -D__int8=char -D__int16=short -D__int32=int '-D__int64=long long'"

CoD uses opengl, so it runs probably better in normal wine

How do you compile CVS with custom cflags and debugging disabled?

This is a poorly written, biased article with little to no fact behind it.

Actually, Transgaming did basically take Wine, which hundreds of people have contributed to for free over the years, and modify it and now they make money off of it. Now Transgaming won't release a free version, nor will they merge the code.

Transgaming sucks :(

Transgaming is making money off their modifications to wine, if people don't want to pay for the work Transgaming has put into winex then they can use wine. Winex is still available freely by cvs minus the parts they are legally unable to distribute.

I dont mind transgaming making money off of their closed source copyprotection stuff and their direct3d 8/9 support, but I do mind that transgaming presents winex as the game solution for linux, this is probably because winex original goal (to maken direct3d games working) has failed (sorry, but only a few games work without problems), now a lot of people think that winex is better for games and get tricked into buying it to play their opengl windows games (which work because of the hard work of the wine hackers and not transgaming)

The only reason to actually buy winex is their copyprotection stuff, which lets you install crappy games that cant be installed without windows

Hmmmm

Transgaming has actually sponsored alot of work and given back to Wine, (eg. the ALSA backend for wine, the msi installer support, etc...). If transgaming weren't around and they didn't have restrective use terms then no one would buy it, and none of this work would ever get done at all, closed source or not. If you don't like closed source at all, that's fine; don't buy WineX. As far as the accusation that Transgaming is stealing current wine developers work, that's simply completely false; wine changed their license to the GPL to prevent that about a year/two years ago.

I've been a subscriber to Transgaming since Loki failed, after having bought every single Loki title I still wanted to have good support for gaming in Linux. Until LGP gains enough support and can buy some more major title rights (Buy every title LGP releases!) transgaming is filling in a gap and letting me get some good gaming done without needing to pay the ol' MS tax.

WineX also has much better support for games than wine, they didn't just "Steal wine and then trick people into thinking they need WineX for games in Linux". WineX has better support for games (Half life, BF1942, Warcraft 3, Sim City 4, Master of Orion 3, Far Cry - all working well enough here). I tried the latest wine ebuild before posting, and couldn't even get BF1942 to start up.

Finally, If you're arguing that Transgaming is bad for Linux gaming and you don't own a copy of Majesty by LGP, then you should start putting your money where your mouth is. Honestly, WineX isn't so great that you wouldn't take a native port any day of the week and pay extra for it. It really does suck compared to native gaming (Ut2004, RTCW, Descent 3, CTP).

Just my .02 Euros.

half-life, warcraft3 and far cry all use opengl and run just as good with wine, thats not something you can attribute to winex/transgaming

I never tried sc4 / masters of orion 3 so I cant say if those work with wine (if they use opengl/directx7 they probably do)

bf1942 is a game I cant get running with either wine or winex (recent cvs), so maybe the game uses some stuff that isnt in cvs (winex cvs is more a way to trick people into submiting patches I feel)

The only direct3d games (yes, that whats winex is meant for) that worked for me with winex were max payne 2 (very nice) and gta3 (slowdown --> but I do admit I ran this some time ago with winex 2.x), besides this I got nfs:u running (very slow and buggy --> winex from cvs last month)

I can believe that the binary version has more tweaks and patches than cvs but I cant believe that all my direct3d only games magically run with no slowdown at all when I pop out $5 to subscribe for it.

Il'l rather spend my money with lgp and id/epic and run the rest of my games with wine (mohaa(wine does actually runs this better than the linux beta)/cod/wc3/farcry/homeworld/maxpayne etc)

Maybe I'll try a one month subscription to test if bf1942 works with the binary version but I have not much hope that it will run without problems

It really pisses me off when people rag on transgaming. I pay $5 a month and I feel every cent of it is for a good purpose. Transgaming reserves the rights given to them through the GPL, and that includes the right to sell their their product. And please don't complain about it not being free, because the CVS version is free. That boycott website is a bunch of BS as well.
