|

I haven't found any image browser/viewer that is as good as the one built into explorer in WindowsXP (sad, but true).
What I wan't is this:
- A large preview of the image
- A row with thumbnails, for easy selection of the image to preview
- Ability to step to next/previous image with the arrowkeys
- Video playing (.mpg and .avi) either builtin or via another app.
- A nice button for starting a slideshow
- Pausing/resuming the slideshow
And alternatively some basic editing tools, like rotation in 90 degree steps.
The closest match I've found so far is GQview, but as it can't display videos it doesn't suffice.
Currently I've tested:
DigiKam, Konqueror, Kuickshow, Kview, Pornview and GQview.
Konqueror fails because it hasn't got any large display of the picture, else I think that would be the best choice.
As you've probably already figured out I'm using KDE, so KDE compatible apps are prefered. |

normally I would recommend gthumb, but I dont think that many image viewers can view video formats (then you end up with konqueror or nautilus) _________________ In "old" Europe we already have a word for "pre-emptive strikes" mr Bush: its called "war" |

Technically, even on Windows XP there are different programs that perform the tasks you mention.
video is shown using Windows Mediaplayer.
As far as I know, there is no such single program, nor under Windows nor Linux that will perform all these tasks. It is only a question about integration.
What is the big deal about using different programs to do different tasks?

The problem with using many programs is that it doesn't give you that intigrated feel. I mean only about 1% of people who use the image slide show viewer in explorer actually know that those images that are comming up are comming from different sources.
That is the problem with Linux too many programs and not enought intigration |

I recommend pornview. Yeah, the name is a little funny, but AFAIK it can do all what you ask for
- A large preview of the image - check
- A row with thumbnails, for easy selection of the image to preview - check
- Ability to step to next/previous image with the arrowkeys - check
- Video playing (.mpg and .avi) either builtin or via another app. - check (with xine as backend)
- A nice button for starting a slideshow - check (I wouldn't call it nice, but it's there)
- Pausing/resuming the slideshow - not sure about this
Give it a shot, it's in portage

I don't know if this has all of the features you are looking for, but try pornview. _________________ Of course you can have my root password. I'm on Hardened! |

I would recommend you PixiePlus. It has nice features, except one big: it didn't play videos.
But in my opinion, you want too many functions from one program. If you want to play movie files in good quality and good speed, you should use mplayer. It is optimized for it.
WindowsXP's builtin viewer is not too good for movies...

The big deal is that my mom and dad wants to view their digital photo album, which contains some small movies.
The difference between Explorer and the apps I've tested sofar is that Explorer integrates all these features in a rather good way, which the others don't...
I'll have a look at pornview today, as that seems to have all the functions I'm looking for.
Kinda interesting name too |

Konqueror would be the simplest option, but as it haven't got support for viewing images in a large window, and starting a slideshow it doesn't qualify...
Perhaps one could write a plugin to do this? |

Kuickshow works for me, it has all the features you want except fo video playback. Only problem is that you need to emerge the entire kdegraphics package. |

a slideshow with it (I'm using kde 3.2)

There are plenty of pseudo-ebuilds that contain small components in kde. I'm sure there is one for kuickshow _________________ Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't
