Well, I'm bored and I have an extra 6 gig harddrive, but I don't know what to do with it. I've used various Linux distros in my eperience, and I've used NetBSD. I thought about installing FreeBSD on it, but then thought it wouldn't be that different. So, the question is has anyone used one of the really alternative OSs? SkyOS and AtheOS comes to mind. I'd just like to see what other people's experiences are before I rush off to download something, I am on dila-up after all...

BeOS and Open BeOS discussion split off into this thread.
Maybe gfunkmonk can get some input on his question ;)

Check out Syllable:

syllable.sourceforge.net

It's a fork of AtheOS but progressing really good ATM. And it has a nice community.

MenuetOS isn't really an OS you'd call useful, but it's written entirely in x86 assembly and fun to play around with. Quote from their HP:
Quote:

- graphical UI with 16 M colours up to 1280x1024
- pre-emptive multitasking, multithreading, ipc
- ide: editor/compiler for applications and kernel
- kernel and application sources included (GPL)
- ethernet; tftp (& music stream)
- free-form application windows
- hard real-time data fetch
- fits in a single floppy

Since Menuet fits to a single floppy, you only need one blank 1.44 M diskette.
Your hard disks are not affected in any way. Assembly programmers unite!

Theres a cd iso of this on a russian site, it took for ever to download but is only 1.8 meg. Once you chhose the options for display etc at and tell it ti start it boots in like 4 seconds flat on my laptop!! (XP2000 256MBRAM). Is quite nice, a very promising start anyway.
