Ok - I finally got gpm running so I can copy/paste to my hearts content.

I have just installed gentoo for the second time on this hardware, so I know X works with it.

When I do
Code:
 XFree86 -configure
followed by
Code:
 XFree86 -xf86config /root/XFree86Config.new
I get: (less /var/log/XFree86.0.log)
Code:

This is a pre-release version of XFree86, and is not supported in any
way.  Bugs may be reported to XFree86@XFree86.Org and patches submitted
to fixes@XFree86.Org.  Before reporting bugs in pre-release versions,
please check the latest version in the XFree86 CVS repository
(http://www.XFree86.Org/cvs).

You might make sure that this driver is build properly. Show your XF86Config as well. For DRI on my radeon, I had to set the default color depth to 16 or 24. X defaults to 8bit color depth which the DRI hardware does not support.

Here are a couple of things to try: set the default depth higher than 8bits per pixel. Force DDC detection of monitor modes. Manual entry of monitor mode.

How do I "force DDC detection of monitor modes"? Sorry - excuse my n00bness.

If I use xf86config to generate a config file, presumably manually entering my monitor modes and default color depth, I get the DDC error as well as some fatal one - I'll paste it in a minute.

Thanks for your replies, I'll try those suggestions,
Cam

this is really starting to bother me - 2 weeks with a running system and still no x!

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there any chance I'd find success by emerging 4.2.1 or something? I think I'll try that, but in the meantime, I'd love to hear any suggestions or tips that might solve my problem, or how to force DDC detection.

Thanks,
Cam

I encountered a similar problem.
If your problem is solved, please post a working config file.
