Hopefully this is just a dup and I can't find the post where this is answered. I've been using Vmware 3.2 for since it was first released. When Vmware released the security patched version many months ago, I was reluctant to upgrade because everything was working so well. But after the earlier version was dropped from portage I bit the bullet. I've had this problem ever since which prevents me from using vmware in fullscreen regardless of the guest os. Here's the exact message: | Code: | Failed to set virtual terminal mode for /dev/tty9: Operation not permitted
Unable to allocate virtual terminal for full-screen VGA.
Full-screen VGA will not be available. | Seems like an obvious permissions problem, which I've checked. | Code: | | crw-rw-rw- 1 root tty 4, 9 Jan 15 14:11 /dev/tty9 | I've chowned this to my username as well with no luck. The virtual terminal is available which I've verified by echoing text directly to it. The dga thing is not an issue (this is not my first time vmware install).
I've since replaced the video card and motherboard since I first had this problem (general upgrades) and rebuilt the system from stage 1, so this is like two computers. It seems like this is either a problem with this version of vmware (3.2) or something unique about my kernel config or other software configuration.
My real question is does anyone still use 3.2, and if so have you ever seen this message? (I was one month past getting a free upgrade to vesion 4, damn the luck.) |

I am having the exact same problem.
Still running vmware 3.x
Unfortunatly, I upgraded vmware, the ati drivers, and my kernel all in the same day so I do not know where the issue is.
I have been having this issue for about 6 weeks. Every know and then I search the forums. Your post is the first person I have seen with the same issue.
I have also searched google and vmware's (should we call them EMC now?) tech support site. I have not turned up any solutions.
Hopefully someone else knows how to fix this issue.
I have tried switching to full screen. It does not work. Screen goes blank. There is no way to get back to Linux. Have to turn computer off then on. Even the three fingered salute does not work. |

Your issue sounds slightly different from mine. The option to go to full screen is disabled after receiving the message. I can select full screen, but nothing happens. Do you get the same error message?
BTW, in desperation I've posted to the Vmware community forums as well. Vmware Community Forums
I'll update this post if anything interesting comes from it. |

| I get exactly the same error message as you. The only difference is that mine says /dev/tty8. |

I've ran into the same problem here with /dev/tty8. I can't even select full screen as well. _________________ "Free" as in "free speech", not as in "free beer".
